How To Prepare for BITSAT (Do’s and Don’ts)

Though BITS Pilani is one of the premier institutes of India, BITSAT is one of the easiest exams to crack. All it takes is dedication and a proper study plan. While making the plan, keep the following things in mind

BITS Pilani

BITSAT Preparation General Tips

  • Look at previous year papers of BITSAT first. The difficulty level of the exam is much lower than what you’d expect. This would also give you a good idea of what topics to focus on.
  • In general, a lot of concepts are from NCERT. Read through the textbooks properly and practice many questions.
  • A Complete Success Package for BITSAT by Arihant (with CD) is one of the most popular all-in-one books for BITSAT today. It focuses on all the 5 sections and also covers all NCERT topics thoroughly.
  • Other good recommendations include The Pearson Complete Guide to BITSAT and Comprehensive Guide to BITSAT 2015 with Mock Test CD (with Insta Reports and sync facility) by Disha Experts.
  • Do not be discouraged by the mock test papers of BITSAT you get online. Most students score around 200 in them, but in the actual exam can easily get above 300.
  • Time management is key. BITSAT does not test you with tricky questions like JEE does. The former is more about speed and accuracy than conceptual knowledge. So, even if your concepts are clear, you might struggle if you’re not fast enough to beat the clock.
  • There are 12 bonus questions at the end. You can only attempt them if you have already attempted all the questions in all the 4 sections. Though, be careful, as you won’t be able to back to change the answers to those questions once you start answering the bonus questions.
  • Practice, practice, practice.

BITSAT Mathematics Preparation Tips

  • This has the highest weightage in the exam with a whopping 45 out of 150 questions.
  • A lot of questions are direct formula applications and do not take much thinking.
  • Hence, make note of all the important formulae and revise them regularly. It will save you a lot of time.
  • Special emphasis is on Differential calculus, integration, coordinate geometry, and complex numbers.
  • Do not forget Trigonometry! Though it is an easy topic, questions based on properties of triangles could be your downfall if you don’t remember the concepts.
  • Start with NCERT and move on to R.D. Sharma. For more practice refer to S.K. Goyal (Arihant publications).

BITSAT Physics Preparation Tips

  • This section is usually touted to be the most difficult. Hence, if you are strong at physics, you have an upper hand.
  • Mechanics and Thermodynamics are scoring topics. A large chunk of the section is from these topics.
  • Another important topic is electricity and electromagnetism. Practice a lot for these topics.
  • HC Verma is your bible. Solve all questions from the book diligently.
  • If you want more practice, go for DC Pandey. This series includes a set of five books:
    • Understanding Physics series by D. C Pandey
    • Understanding Physics: Mechanics (Part – 1)
    • Understanding Physics: Electricity & Magnetism
    • Understanding Physics: Wave & Thermodynamics
    • Understanding Physics: Optics & Modern Physics
  • Practice dimensional analysis. You would be surprised by how many questions can be easily solved by using elimination and a little bit of dimensional analysis.
  • This section, too, tests your speed more than your knowledge. Hence, practice improving your accuracy so that you don’t make silly mistakes in the exam.

BITSAT Chemistry Preparation Tips

  • This is the easiest subject of the three in PCM when it comes to BITSAT, and hence, the scoring section.
  • NCERT is your holy grail. There are many direct questions from the same.
  • If you’re already done with NCERT, you may refer to J.D. Lee or O.P. Tandon for inorganic chemistry and Arihant books for organic chemistry.
  • The paper will be more theoretical than numerical. Hence, focus more on organic and inorganic.
  • BITSAT loves questions of the sort where you have to sort the given substances based on a certain property. This is where many students fail as they get confused between ascending and descending orders. Revise these properties regularly to avoid such trivial mistakes.
  • Remember, Chemistry in everyday life is a part of the syllabus!
  • For both organic and inorganic, practice all reactions thoroughly. You would be directly tested on them.
  • For physical chemistry, NCERT may not be enough. But if you’re already preparing for JEE, you need not worry about this one!
  • You can refer to P. Bahadur and M. S. Chauhan for good problems and clear your concepts.

English and Logical Reasoning

  • This is a tricky section. If you have a good command over the English language, this would be a piece of cake for you. But if you have a poor vocabulary, you might not be able to prepare for this entirely as there is no set syllabus.
  • Do not ignore this section. It could get you a good rank.
  • Though, worry not! Reading a few pages of a good book or of the newspaper daily can help immensely.
  • If you feel like you are too weak in this section, it would be a good idea to refer to books like BITSAT English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning by Disha Experts, The Pearson Complete Guide to BITSAT by One Learn Education or Wren and Martin to hone your skills.
  • For logical reasoning, it just takes a little practice. Go through a lot of previous year papers.

Every year, millions of students apply for the exam but only a handful get through. In the end, it all comes down to the presence of mind during the exam. So, don’t stress much and go attempt the exam with a relaxed mind, you’ll ace it. ALL THE BEST!

What are you score the same marks as someone else?

Like sports,  there is also a criterion for tie-breaker where two students having similar marks will be given the preference. There are a few guidelines for this process

  • Firstly if the marks are equal than the marks of biology for both the students are considered. The one that gets the higher marks in biology gets a higher merit rank.
  • If both the candidates still have the same biology marks than one with higher in chemistry is considered.
  • If the marks are still the same, then the candidate with fewer mistakes is considered.
  • Finally, if the marks still remain the same than age is given the preference. The student who is old is given the preference over the younger student.

NEET 2019 Counseling and Merit List

There are two types of merit that will be prepared and released in NEET 2019.

First merit list will be the All India rank quota of 15%. The name of the students that have opted for this quota will be sent to the directorate general of health-related services, ministry of family welfare and health, the government of India. After this, the candidate will be offered a seat in the counseling round.

The second round is for the candidates that did not opt for this quota. Here also, AIR will be sent to the respective authorities. Furthermore, the admission committees will be sending the applications of selected candidates to counseling. On the basis of this counseling round, admitting committees will send a separate merit list. Based on this list, medical data will be allotted to the students.
