Subject: Stop duping tourists with false promises
Respected Sir/Madam,
Through this letter, I would like to file a complaint against your travel agency. Your agents had arranged a trip to Nainital for Pragya Public School. You promised that you would provide us with the best package but unfortunately it did not meet our expectations.

The seats of the bus were uncomfortable. We booked a bus for 40 students but you provided us a mini bus of 30 seats. Many students had to travel standing. Even the refreshments given to the students seemed stale and unhealthy. Moreover, the accommodation arrangements were far from satisfactory and had no proper ventilation. The supervisors were not willing to serve. Many of them used abusive language with us.

Your high profile leaflet duped us. In practice, it has no existence. I request you to lodge my complaint and look into the discrepancies of your agency.
Yours sincerely

Subject: Unsanitary conditions in the city Respected Sir/Madam
Through this letter, I wish to draw your attention to the poor sanitary conditions in the city.
Sanitation in India is a multifold problem. Poor urban planning is compounded by migrations to cities, which increases the slum population. Water scarcity, inadequate rural infrastructure, illiteracy, and homelessness are some problems to consider. To tackle all these problems, the following steps should be implemented.

For tackling migration, appropriate city planning is needed. The authorities need to ensure clean water and sanitation services in all houses. The government can also establish multiple public toilets, which will prevent public defecation that spread infections.

Processing of sewage can help in multiple ways as the residual organic waste can be separated from the water and be used for creating organic fertilisers. This also helps to decrease water pollution. I hope your department will take these suggestions into consideration and improve our condition.
Yours sincerely
Nitish / Nikita

The following bar graph shows the result of a survey for the years 2010-2019 to understand the usage of utilities across a state. Write a paragraph in 100-120 words analysing the data and how this reflects on the improved lifestyle of people. [5]
CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 English Set 9 with Solutions 3
Answer:
Spending Habits
Lifestyle magazine conducted a survey to analyse the spending habits of people from March-April. The spending pattern fluctuates with each month, but expenditure on utilities gets the lion’s share. In January, people spend the most on entertainment when welcoming the new year. People also spend on dining out, buying utilities and household goods.

In February, with exams round the corner, the focus shifts to studies and people spend less on entertainment. With the financial year and the academic year ending in March, people again spend on dining out and entertainment to celebrate their victories. The one constant is that each month, a big chunk of money goes towards buying utilities. While the spending on household items varies each month, it does not have a big share of the spending. The one thing that is constant is the spending power of the middle classes.
OR
Utilities or Necessities?
The bar chart shows the result of a survey conducted in 2010 – 2019 indicating percentages of utilities being used by the households. The chart clearly shows that television was the most popular utility item. The fascination for TV remains steadfast with channels to suit each person’s temperament and taste.

The increasing sales of vacuum cleaners and washing machines are clear pointers that doing such chores manually remain difficult. Refrigerators appeared to have gained popularity among the poor. The telephone gained popularity with people ready to spend on this necessity.

However, despite the new variety of cars, the sales did not show an upward trend. The high cost might be a deterrent. Purchase of central heating was limited to the rich. However, the sales did pick up and showed improvement from 1997 and by 2000 as almost 50% of the households had it.

Question 6.
Attempt ANY ONE of the given extracts. (1 x 5 = 5)
When the train had gone, I found myself standing alone on the deserted platform. I had no idea where to spend the night. I had no friends, believing that friends were more trouble than help. And I did not want to make anyone curious by staying at one of the small hotels near the station. The only person I knew really well was the man I had robbed. Leaving the station, I walked slowly through the bazaar.

In my short career as a thief, I had made a study of men’s faces when they had lost their goods. The greedy man showed fear; the rich man showed anger; the poor man showed acceptance. But I knew that Anil’s face, when he discovered the theft, would show only a touch of sadness.

Not for the loss of money, but for the loss of trust. I found myself in the maidan and sat down on a bench. The night was chilly – it was early November – and a light drizzle added to my discomfort. Soon it was raining quite heavily. My shirt and pyjamas stuck to my skin, and a cold wind blew the rain across my face.
(A) How would Sunil feel after the robbery? [1]
Answer:
As the narrator of the story tells us that the man he had robbed, had trusted him far more than anything else and the robbery was a theft of trust more than the robbery of money. When a person is robbed off with trust he neither feels greed, anger nor fear. He feels sad.
