15.Read the following passage carefully :
Gates Avenue was a short street, but it seemed longer because it was so ugly. Most of the families who lived there had very little money. They never expected to have any more. Their houses had not been painted for many years and they did not have even running water. The girls in the school near Gates Avenue wore pretty new clothes on a spring festival. But one little girl wore some dirty clothes that she had worn all winter. Probably that was the only dress she owned. The teacher noticed this. The little girl was not very neat. One day the teacher said, “Leave alone your clothes, would you wash your face before you come to school tomorrow morning?” The girl smiled and replied, “I have only one frock and one face. I cannot give my frock to a laundry. Regarding my face, I shall keep it clean by washing.” The teacher took pity on the poor girl. She bought two new frocks for the girl. The girl got her spring gifts.

16.Read the following passage carefully :
The trees of the world are fast disappearing. Not only are trees cut down for feeding industries, but forests are burnt down to find land for cultivation. Most people agree that something should be done. Some argue that the Government should pass a law against using wood as fuel for cooking. Most tree lovers think each person in the world should plant one tree every year. In the meanwhile, scientists in the United States are trying to breed a tree that will be ideal for city life. This tree should have shallow roots. It should have fairly short branches. Branches that reach too high interfere with overhead lines. The ideal tree should not drop fruit on people either. Most importantly, the tree of the future should be so tough that insects cannot harm it. It should resist disease. And it should be able to withstand the effect of air pollution.                                                   ‘

ANSWERS

SECTION -I

1. Write the uses of platelets In blood.
A. 1) Blood platelets play an important role in blood clotting.
2) When the blood vessel is injured, the platelets collect at the site of the injury and form a plug.
3) This reduces the loss of blood to some extent.
4) They also release several factors into the blood which help in blood clotting and in the repair and healing of blood vessels.

2.When will you get muscle cramps and why ?
A. 1) We obtain energy by aerobic respiration.
2) But anaerobic respiration can sometimes take place in our muscles.
3) During vigorous exercise oxygen gets used up faster in the muscle cells that can be supplied by the blood.
4) When anaerobic respiration takes place in human muscles, glucose is converted into lactic acid with the release of a small amount of energy.
5) The anaerobic respiration by muscles bring about partial breakdown of glucose to form lactic acid.
6) The accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles causes muscular pains or cramps.

3. Imagine what will happen if waste materials are not sent out of our body from time to time.
A. 1) If waste materials are not sent out of the body from time to time they get accumulated in the body.
2) The accumulation of toxic wastes in the body harms an organism.
3) For an organism to lead a normal life, the toxic wastes being produced in its body must be removed from time to time.
4) If all the waste released is not sent out, the waste gets stagnated, produce toxins and poisons which pollute the body. They lead to death of the organism.

4.  Write the symptoms of ‘Marasmus’.
A. This is due to deficiency of both proteins and calories. Generally this disease occurs when there is an immediate second pregnancy or repeated child births. Lean and weak, swelling limbs, less developed muscles, dry skin, diarrhoea, etc., are the symptoms of this disease.

5.What is a “perfect pesticide” ?
A. The perfect pesticide is one which destroys a particular pest and is completely harmless to every other form of life.
No such pesticide exists or likely to.

6. What is a food web ?
A. Food web is the elaborate interconnected feeding relationships in an ecosystem. Many of the food chains in an ecosystem are crosslinked to form food web.

SECTION -II

Group – A
7. How are alveoli designed to maximize the exchange of gases ?
A. The human lungs have been designed to maximise the exchange of gases as follows.
1) There are millions of alveoli in the lungs.
2) The presence of millions of alveoli in the lungs provide a very large area for the exchange of gases.
3) Availability of large surface area maximises the exchange of gases.

8. Write the difference between autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition.
ap-ssc-10th-class-general-science-2-model-paper-2015-16-english-medium-set-5-8jpg_Page1

9. What is your inference about experiments with aphids ?
A. 1) Aphids feed on the plant juices of young stems.
2) Aphid uses its long needle like organ “proboscis” to extract plabt juices from phloem tissue.
3) The juices extracted by aphid contains sugars and amino acids.
4) Aphids absorb so much sugar from the phloem but cannot assimilate all of it and passes out of the body as a sticky syrup called honey dew.

10. How plants manage the waste materials ?
A. 1) Plants can get rid of excess water by a process like transpiration and guttation.
2) Waste products may be stored in leaves, bark and fruits.
3) When these dead leaves, bark and ripe fruits fall off from the tree then waste products in them are get rid of.
4) Some of the plants waste gets stored in the fruits in the form of solid bodies called Raphides. g: Yam.
5) Several plants prepare chemicals and store them in roots, leaves, seeds, etc., for protection against herbivores.

Group -B
11. Give an example to show how hormones can influence visible changes in your body.
A. 1) Endocrine glands secrete chemical substances called Hormones directly into blood.
2) Hormones act on the cells of other organs and increase or decrease the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
3) The external features by which the males and females can be distinguished are called secondary sexual characters are responsible by the influence of hormones.
4) For example if a dog is after us, some changes we will observe on our body. When we are afraid, the rate of heart beat increases, the breath rate will be faster, blood pressure increases, the hair on the body becomes erect and we get goose bumps.
All these changes are by the release of adrenalin secreted by adrenal gland to bring back our body into normal.

12. What is meant by external fertilization ? Give examples.
A. 1) If the fusion of sperms and ova occurs outside the body of the animal, it is called external fertilisation.
2) External fertilisation is seen in fish, frog and earthworm.

13. Why should we conserve fossil fuels ?
A. 1) Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources.
2) If once they are used up, they never replanish again or take several thousands of years to replanish.
3) They become integral part of our life, that we cannot live without these.
4) So, we need to conserve fossil fuels so that we don’t run out of them.

14.What happens if we remove predators from food web ?
A. 1) If all the predators (Carnivores) are removed from the earth, the population of herbivores will increase.
2) Large population of herbivores will over graze.
3) As a result all plants will disappear from the earth’s surface and ultimately the earth may become a desert.
4)The biosphere will get disturbed which will lead to the end of life on earth.

SECTION -III

Group – A
15.a) What is the aim of the above experiment ?
A. To prove that oxygen is evolved during photosynthesis.
b) State the reason for decrease in water level in the inverted test tube.
A. Gas bubbles come from the cut ends of Hydrilla plants. These gas bubbles collected at the testtube displacing water into the beaker. Hence, water level decreases in the test tube.
c)If we place the whole apparatus in darkness, what would be the result of this experiment ?
A. Photosynthesis does not take place and so there is no scope for release of oxygen. The aim of the experiment won’t be fulfilled.
d) What apparatus do you require to conduct this experiment ?
A. Hydrilla plant, beaker, test tube, funnel, water, glowing splinter or incense stick.

16. How does gaseoiis exchange takes place at blood level ?
A. 1) Within the alveoli, exchange of gases takes place between the gases inside the alveoli and blood.
2) Blood arriving in the alveoli has a higher C02 concentration which is produced during respiration by the body’s cells.
3) At the same time air in the alveoli has a much lower concentration of C.02 and this allows the diffusion of CO, out of the blood and to alveolar air.
4) Similarly blood arriving in the alveoli has a lower oxygen concentration while air in the alveoli has a higher oxygen concentration.
5) Therefore oxygen moves into the blood by diffusion.

17. a) Differences between Excretion – Secretion :
ap-ssc-10th-class-general-science-2-model-paper-2015-16-english-medium-set-5-17.1jpg_Page1
b)  Differences between Propulsion – Retropulsion :

18. a) What happens if we add 2 drops of Iodine to the prepared starch solution ?
A. The starch solution turns to deep blue colour.
b) What change do you find in the sample in which water is added ?
A. There would be no change in the colour of the starch solution present in the test tube to which water is added.
c) Name the enzyme that is responsible for the change in the second test tube.
A. Ptyaline (or) Salivary Amylase.

Group – B
19. In what way Mendel used the word ‘Traits” ? Explain with an example.
A. 1) Trait is a separate variant of an organism.
2) Mendel hypothesized that characters were carried as traits.
3) An organism always carried a pair of factors for a character.
4) He also hypothesized that distinguishing traits of the same character were present in the population of an organism.
5) He assumed that the traits shown by the pea plants must be in the seeds that produce them.
6) The seeds must have obtained these traits from the parent plants.
7) The factors which are responsible for character or trait of an organism, are now named as “genes”.
8) By all these we can assume that Mendel used the word ‘traits’ for indicating the variant of an organism expressed by a pair of factors or genes.
9) For example height is a character of pea plant while the tallness is a trait expressed by a pair of factors either TT or Tt and dwarfness is another trait expressed by a pair of factors tt.

20. Suggest some approaches towards the conservation of water.
A. 1) Wastage of water should be strictly minimised.
2) Washing hands in the plant pots.
3) Rain water should be directed into recharge pits.
4) Care should be taken to prevent leakage of water from pipes and taps.
5) Wash clothes in running water canals if possible.
6)  Direct the kitchen water free from soap and detergents to the garden.
7) Use the soap and detergent water for toilet flush or cleaning vehicles.
8) Recycling of water can be done on large scale in towns and cities and can be utilised again.
9) Cooperation between the states through which a river passing is very essential for providing water for all.
10) People should be motivated in such a way that each drop of water is life and should conserve it.

21. Draw a pyramid of number considering yourself as top level consumer.
A. 1) If we consider a food chain in which man feed on fish which feed on animal plankton and the animal plankton in turn feed on plant plankton, the pyramid of number is like the figure given here.
2) In the plant planktons are more in number which are producers, hence at the base forming first tropic level.
ap-ssc-10th-class-general-science-2-model-paper-2015-16-english-medium-set-5-21jpg_Page1
3) Animal planktons are primary consumers which feed on plant planktons and are comparatively less in number. Arranged above the plant planktons as second tropic level.
4) Fishes are secondary consumers feed on animal planktons, less in number than animal planktons. This forms third tropic level over the animal planktons.
5) Man being top level consumer (tertiary) feeds on fish, less in number than fishes, so man forms fourth tropic level at the top of the pyramid.

22. How can you justify the enteric nervous system as the second brain of the gut ?
A. 1) Enteric nervous system, the second brain consists of sheaths of neurons embedded in the walls of the long tube of our gut, or alimentary canal.
2) The second brain measures about nine meters end to end from the oesophagus to the anus.
3)The second brain contains some 100 million neurons, more than in either the spinal cord or the peripheral nervous system.
4) This multitude of neurons in the enteric nervous system enables us to “feel” the inner world of our gut and its contents.
5) Enteric nervous system contains mass of neural tissue filled with important neurotransmitters.
6) This reveals that it does much more than merely handle digestion or inflict the occasional nervous pang of hunger.
7) Enteric nervous system stimulates and coordinates the breaking down of food, absorbing nutrients and expelling of waste.
8) Thus equipped with its own reflexes and senses, the second brain can control several gut functions often independently of the brain.
9) Several scientists also believe that the enteric nervous system is a way too complicated to have evolved only to make sure things move through and out of our gut smoothly.
10) Hence we can justify that the enteric nervous system as the second brain of the gut.

The great symbol of dance is Shiva, the Cosmic Dancer, depicted in sculpture and poetry as Nataraja. Similarly, the classical theatre in India has a history of more than two thousand years. It was performed in palaces and in temples. The classical plays combined music and dance. Tragedy was, and is, still discouraged otherwise; the range of themes covered is wide.
It is this strand of cultural unity running through the country that we are heir to, and to which people in the West are increasingly turning now. 16.Read the following passage.
The most picturesque lake in the Kashmir Valley, the Dal lake, which skirts the capital Srinagar, is losing its charm. The lake, once described by Sir Walter Lawrence as the most beautiful spot in the world, is facing near extinction. Its pristine glory and gentle waters are fast turning into a fantasy.
Sewage from the city flows unchecked and untreated into the once crystal clear waters of the lake as if shedding tears of blood over the present situation in the valley. The Dal waters have turned red. The culprit is the red toxic algae moss, euglena which hinders photosynthesis of the plants in the lake bed, thus signalling death to aquatic life. Euglena multiplies quickly and has a propensity to change colours. Between temperatures of 30 and 35 degrees C, it looks crimson red and below 30°C, it looks green. The unprecedented algae bloom is due to the unscientific and unmonitored deweeding by the authorities. The bloom which has a high organic content is responsible for gastro intestinal diseases. The water of the lake has turned acidic.
With its vanishing charm the Dal’s size too has been under attack. Originally spread over 24 square kilometers, the lake has shrunk to less than 18 sq km today. To restore the Dal, several international organisations have come forward to help the State Government. But unless an awareness programme is taken up to make locals understand the importance of the lake, foreign aid can be of no avail.

21.Explain Darwin’s theory of evolution, “natural selection” with an
Ans.Darwin’s theory of evolution in a nutshell:
1)The theory of natural selection was proposed by Charles Darwin.
2)This theory states that nature only selects or decides which organism should survive or perish in nature.
3)The organisms with useful traits will survive.
4)The organisms having harmful traits are going to be perished or eliminated from its environment.
For example we have seen in the case of red beetles which were seen and eaten by crows. So, the population of red beetles gradually got eliminated or perished from its environment. But at the same time the beetles which are green in colour which are present on the green leaves were not noticed by crows. So the green beetles survived in the environment and their population have gradually increased. This is nothing but “natural selection”.

22.With the help of a diagram show the movement of food from mouth to the stomach. What muscles and nerves are involved in the movement of food and what is this action called ?
Ans.Muscles involved in movement of food from mouth to stomach :
1) Typical movement of the oesophagus, stomach and intestine is called peristalsis. The muscles of the mouth enable the food to be pushed in the oral cavity.
2)The first major muscle movement occurs when food or liquid is swallowed. Once the swallowing begins, it becomes involuntary and proceeds under the control of nerves in the jaw.
3)Contraction and relaxation of circular and longitudinal muscles in the oesophagus bring in a wave-like motion that propels the bolus into stomach by the action called peristalsis.
4)As the food approaches the closed ring of pyloric sphincter the surrounding muscles relax and allow the food to pass.
5)The muscles of the upper part of the stomach have to relax and accept large volumes of swallowed material.
6)The lower part of the stomach mixes food, liquid and digestive juice by its muscle action.
Nerves involved in the movement of food :
1)The fifth cranial nerve has been found to control the movement of muscles in the jaw.
2)Under the action of autonomous nervous system saliva is secreted to make chewing and swallowing easier.
3)Peristalsis in oesophagus is also under the control of autonomous nervous system.
4)When the food is in the oral cavity, the nerves in the cheek and tongue are stimulated and carry messages in the form of nerve impulses to the brain.
5)These messages are transmitted from the brain to the wall of the stomach and stimulate the gastric glands to produce gastric juice.

Dear sister,
It’s a long time since you wrote to me. I am quite concerned for you. I know you must be very busy with your job and household chores. So I thought I should write to you.
How do you feel at home and at work ? Are you comfortable managing both the responsibilities? It is an arduous activity to maintain the nexus between both. But I know that you are perfect in maintaining relations. Your hospitality and amicable approach will definitely help you achieve the success you wish to. But one important thing is you should take care of your health. Take every precaution to sustain the potentiality in you. You should balance your emotions when there is a conflict between two different areas. Be docile and placid to keep up with two different duties of life. You are a mother, a wife, a daughter-in-law towards whom you should sincerely and wholeheartedly forward your service.
At office, you have to handle everything patiently and assiduously. You should be affable to everyone who expect your hospitable approach. Let your professional and personal matters never show adverse affects against each other. That would put you into embarassment. Bye ! Take care and please do communicate with us whenever possible.
Your loving sister,
Avanthi.

Ans.Diary Entry :
12th July 2015.                                       .
It was amazing to be here in this strange uninhabited island with my friends. It’s a gaiety you know. I am so excited ! The serene and tranquil landscape all around. It’s the most wonderful camp I ever had. At the beginning we thought everything was turbulent having missed our way. But this place is awesome. I would like to stay here a couple of days.
We did a little fishing for our breakfast and lunch. We collected some fish and weeds. We put up some tents to take shelter in the night. All. of us had fun cooking the fish on the camp fire ! As we need protection against cruel animals, we set up a camp fire. Surprisingly, no one was afraid to stay in the island. In fact, we loved the place and enjoyed the experience. Are there really any tigers or rhinos ? May be, but we would face courageously.
The climate is quite irksome. The sticky, murky climatic conditions, no doubt cause a little perturbance. But I’m sure, none of us take it seriously.
Let us see how long we have to stay here, but I’m going to bag every bit of my experience and preserve it carefully.
Good night !

Hibernation is more than sleep. It is a very deep sleep. In warm countries, where the winters are not very long or very cold, hibernation is not necessary. And in very cold parts of the world, like the far north of Russia, not many animals hibernate; the ground is so hard that they cannot make a deep hole to spend the winter in. But animals in large part of the northern hemisphere spend every winter fast asleep. They go to sleep in all kinds of places. Red squirrels disappear inside trees, bears use caves, frogs go deep under the mud and very many other animals dig tunnels in the earth. Some animals sleep under the snow, there is a lot of air in loose snow, and this helps to keep the cold out. Some warm-blooded animals like the cat, the dog or the wolf, do not need to hibernate. They lead an active life which keeps up their usual body temperature even in very cold winter weather. But for cold-blooded creatures such as a frog or a snake it is a different matter. When the air temperature is below freezing, the creature’s blood temperature drops too, it cannot move about in the usual way. And then it has no choice. It must simply lie down and sleep.

To
The Sub-Inspector of Police,
Chikhli Police Station,
Buldana District,
Maharashtra.

Sir,
Sub : Complaint against Kondiba and his companions over my father’s death.
I am N. Suman, a resident of Vairagad village of Chikhli Tehsil, Buldana District. I wish to bring the following details to your kind notice hoping the you will take necessary action.
You already know that the day before yesterday at the time of the house-warming function, the storeyed house built by my father out of his retirement benefits was burnt. When my father, Bayaji, tried to bring the photographs back from the burning house, he was caught in the fire and died unfortunately. The village officers came and concluded that my father’s death was the result of an accident due to a petromax flare-up.
But the report was quite false. We all strongly believe that Kondiba, the village headman and his companions were responsible for the incident. Kondiba did not like my father’s intention of building a storeyed house in the village. He felt jealous and warned my father not to build the storeyed house. He threatened my father to leave the village, if he wanted to build a storeyed house. On the day of house warming ceremony, Kondiba refused to accept the betel leaves offered by my father. Later he with his companions moved from the place seriously and angrily. After some time the house was on fire from the four sides.
We strongly think that what we believe is right. We complain that Kondil^a and his companions were the responsible people for the incident. So I request you to please inquire them and bring out the truth to do justice for us.
Yours faithfully,
N.Suman
(Bayaji’s eldest son)

Once there lived a king. He was extremely fond of hunting. His ministers, very often, advised him not to kill innocent animals. The king did not pay heed. One day, a lion attacked him. He struck the lion with his sharp arrows. The lion was seriously wounded. Before falling dead to the ground, he struck the king’s right arm with a great force. Half of the flesh of the arm was peeled off. The royal surgeons amputated the arm to save the king’s life. The king grumbled against fate. He cursed god.     .
After two years, the king went out hunting. He lost his way in the thick forest. Some wild people caught hold of him. They were in search of a man to offer him as a sacrifice to the Forest God. The head priest saw the king. He said to his people, “The man is not worthy enough to be given as a sacrifice. He is not complete in body. He has no right arm. Leave him.” The people left the king. Then the king realised that the loss of his right arm had saved his life. He thanked God. He did not hunt again in his life.

16.Read the following passage carefully :
