1. What is known as “Onset of monsoon” ?
2. Study the paragraph below and answer the question.
The formation of the Himalayas influences the climate in various ways. These act as barriers protecting the great plains of India from the cold winds of central Asia during severe winter. The Himalayas are reason for summer rains and monsoon type of climate in regions that are beyond the western ghats of India. In its absence this region would have remained drier. The Himalayan Rivers have a perennial flow since these are fed by the glaciers and bring a lot of silt, making these plains very fertile.
3.Study the paragraph below and answer the questions.
Q: What is the importance of the Himalayas?
Ford Motors, an American company, is one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers with production spread over 26 countries of the world. Ford Motors came to India in 1995 and spent Rs. 1700 crore to set up a large plant near Chennai. This was done in collaboration with Mahindra and Mahindra, a major Indian manufacturer of jeeps and trucks. By the year 2004, Ford Motors was selling 27,000 cars in the Indian markets, while 24,000 cars were exported from India to South Africa, Mexico and Brazil. 1. What is known as “Onset of monsoon” ?
A. The Arabian Sea branch arrives at the west coast of India and moves northward. Both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal branches reach India by the beginning of June, which is known as ‘Onset of monsoon’.

2. What is the importance of the Himalayas?
A.1)  The formation of the Himalayas influences the climate in various ways.
2) These act as barriers protecting the great plains of India from the cold winds of central Asia during severe winter.
3) The Himalayas are reason for summer rains and monsoon type climate in regions that are beyond the Western Ghats of India.
4) The Himalayan rivers have a perennial flow since these are fed by the glaciers.

3. 1)  Would you say Ford Motors is an MNC? Why?
A. Yes, we can say Ford Motors is an MNC, because its production units have spread over 26 countries of the world. This is the most important feature of an MNC.
2). What is foreign investment? How much did Ford Motors invest in India?
A.1) Foreign investment : Private capital investment by firms of one country into those of another country is called foreign investment.

Group -B
5. What is sustainable development ?
A. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, a better quality of life for everyone – now and for generations to come.

6. Water, a natural resource for production, particularly agricultural production, now requires greater capital for its use. Can you explain the statement ?
A. 1) Agriculture is a major user of water resources and the consumption of water is increasing day by day.
2) Indian agriculture mainly depends on rains which are unpredictable.
3) As a result the agriculture has to depend on irrigation facilities such as dams, anicuts, checkdams, bunds, pools, etc. which are most expensive to construct.
4) On the other hand, the farmers are depending on groundwater resources. Lifting the groundwater to surface is also very expensive.
So I can say that water, a natural resource for production, particularly agricultural production now requires greater capital for its use.

7. Suggest any two measures to create more employment in rural India.
A. Some measures to create more employment in rural India :
1) Irrigation facilities should be improved.
2) Roads should be constructed.
3) More education and health facilities should be provided.
4) Agro-based industries should be encouraged.

8. ‘Money cannot buy all the goods and services that one needs to live well.’ Explain.
A. 1) Even though per capita income is high in many states, education and health facilities are still lacking.
2) Money or high per capita income cannot buy a pollution free environment or good health.
3) Money cannot buy peace and democracy.

SECTION – II

9. Why are the Himalayan rivers perennial ?
A. The Himalayan rivers are perennial because they are supplied on rainfall as well as the melting snow.

10. How is an agriculture labourer different from a cultivator?
A. Cultivators are farmers who farm or supervise the land that they own or take on rent.
Agricultural labourers are those who work on another’s farm for wages in cash or kind.

11. What are aerotropolis ?
A. A new kind of settlement is occurring in many countries, including India. These settlements around large airports are called Aerotropolis.

12. Why have some states lesser Infant Mortality Rate ?
A. Some states have lesser Infant Mortality Rate because they have adequate provision of basic health and educational facilities.

13. What was called ‘Arab Spring’ ?
A. In 2013 several nations in Western Asia and Northern Africa like Tunisia, Egypt were influenced by each other’s revolutions and uprooting of dictators. This was called ‘Arab Spring’ in the media

14. What is multiple cropping ?
To grow more than one crop on a piece of land during the same year is called multiple cropping.

SECTION – III

Group – A
15. How does deforestation affect global warming ?
A. Forests through photosynthesis absorb carbon dioxide (C02) and release oxygen (02). The timber of the trees also sequesters carbon. Deforestation means the timber may be used and eventually converted to carbon dioxide, or left to rot, which also means that it is converted to C02, a green house gas responsible for global warming. Similarly the green leaves no longer act as carbon sinks to suck in C02. Either way, deforestation contributes to the global warming process.
Deforestation = Fewer trees = More C02 = Enhanced greenhouse effect = Global warming.

16. “The groundwater laws are both outdated and inappropriate.” Explain the statement in brief.
A. Groundwater has become the main source of water for all the main uses of water. This tremendous increase has significant impacts on water availability and on access to water. The current regulatory regime is in large part still based on principles inherited from the colonial period. These are both outdated and inappropriate. They are outdated because they were developed at a time when groundwater was a marginal source of water and when humans were not able to affect the level of the ground water table through their use which was largely limited to drawing water from wells.
They are inappropriate because the basic nexus between access to groundwater and land ownership on which these rules are based make common law rules socially inequitable and environmentally unsustainable.

17. 1) Who depend on migrant workers ?
A. Construction sites in most urban areas depend on migrant workers.
2) What is also common to see ?
A. It is also common to see migrants selling plastic goods, vegetables, and engage in other petty businesses and casual labour.
3) Where are a large section of such migrants from ?
A. A large section of such migrants are from tribal communities and from drought- prone areas of the state.
4) How are the seasonal migrants ?
A. Seasonal migrants are not only poor but have little or no land at their native place.

18. List out the impacts on society if sex ratio is too low or too high.
A. 1) The unbalanced sex ratios should be reflected in various social settings, including the modern college campus.
2) This ratio impacts the distribution of wealth, alters who sits in board rooms and at the executive levels of corporation and what governments do over time.
3) A high sex ratio can have many implications, including on crime.
4) When there is a shortage of women in the marriage market the women can “marry up”, inevitably leaving the least desirable men with marriage prospectus.
5) Gender imbalance will lead to a reduction in birth rate.

Group -B
19. What do you understand by underemployment? Explain with an example each from the urban and rural areas.
A. Disguised unemployment is a kind of unemployment in which there are people who are visibly employed but are actually unemployed. This is also known as Hidden Unemployment. In such a situation more people are engaged in a work than required.
In rural areas, this type of unemployment is generally found in agricultural sector, e.g.: In a family of 8 people all are engaged in the same agricultural plot. But 3 people are withdrawn from it. There will be no reduction in output. So these 3 people are actually disguisedly in unemployment.
In urban areas, this type of unemployment can be seen mostly in service sectors such as in a family all numbers are engaged in one petty shop or a small business which can be managed by less number of persons.

20. What do you think would be the environmental and human costs of rapid growth in mining ?
A. 1) Rapid growth in mining would have a negative impact on the environment as well as at the human cost.
2) Mines are dug deep, so the layers of earth become weak.
3) They may cause landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, etc.
4) Most of the water is used in the process of digging and later process also.
5) Post liberalisation era brought private people (companies) into mining activities.
6) Accidents may occur, tunnel may fall down, or get flooded with water or there can be fire and suffocation due to gases – these dangers may be faced in mining.
7) With the motto of earning profits, these companies do not take proper measures of safety.
8) Thus, there may be many human losses in rapid extractions of minerals.

21. Give reasons to argue for the following statement “Public Distribution System can ensure better food security for people”.
A. It is a joint responsibility of central government, state government and union territory administration to ensure the smooth functioning of the PDS.
While the responsibility of central government is to procure, store and transport it from purchase points to central godowns, the responsibility of state government and union territory administrations is to lift these commodities from the central godowns and distribute them to consumers through the network of fair price shops. FC1 procures and distributes foodgrains, to provide subsidized food to the poor to mitigate regional inequalities through moving the surplus food to deficit areas and to stabilize agricultural prices.
The universal coverage of PDS was replaced by Targeted real Public Distribution system in 1997 in order to achieve the objective of food security through sale of foodgrains to APT householders at economic cost and confirming the food subsidy bill toward the identified BPL families whose number crossed 97 million families in 2007.

22. 1) Who started exporting plastic toys to India? ‘
A. Chinese manufacturers.

A. Lens maker’s formula :
ap-ssc-10th-class-general-science-model-paper-2015-16-english-medium-set-2-2jpg_Page1
f – focal length of the lens
R1, R2 – Radii of curvature
n – Absolute refractive index
3. What do you mean by electric shock ? Explain how it take place.
A. When current of 0.0024A (or) P.D. 240v flow through the body, the functioning of organs inside the body gets disturbed. This disturbance inside the body is felt as “electric shock”.
This can be experienced when there is potential difference between one part of the body and another part. The electric shock is a combined effect of current and resistance of the body.
4. By observing steel vessels and different images in them, Ramu, a third class student asked some questions to his elder sister Santha. What may be those questions ?
A. Ramu may ask Santha the following (suggested) questions.
1). How these steel vessels form images ?
2) Are these steel vessels mirrors ?
3) Why the images are differ from vessel to vessel ?
4) Why one side they form large image and other side they form smaller image ?
5) As we move away from the vessels the size and shape of the image changed, why ?
6) Why the images are not so clear in the vessels ?

Group – B
5. A mixture of Oxygen and Ethyne is burnt for welding. Can you tell why a mixture of Ethyne and air is not used ?
A. 1) Ethyne when burnt in the presence of oxygen gives enough heat that can be used for welding.
2) Whereas if it is burnt in air which contains nitrogen, C02 and other inactive gaseous contents, sufficient oxygen is not available for burning ethyne to give the required heat.
6. Which method do you suggest for extraction of high reactivity metals ? Why ?
A. I suggest “Electrolysis of fused compounds” for the extraction of high reactivity metals.
Simple chemical reduction method like heating to reduce the ores of these metals are not feasible the temperature required for the reduction is too high and more expensive. Hence I suggest the method of “Electrolysis of Fused Compounds”.
7. Write any two uses and two properties of Covalent compounds.
A. Uses of Covalent Compounds :
1) Water which is covalent compound is of more use to us.
2) Sugar and different types of food materials extensively useful to us are covalent compounds.
3) 99% of our body consists of covalent compounds.
Properties of covalent compounds are :
1) Covalent compounds are liquids and gases at room temperature.
2) They have low melting point and boiling points due to weak vander val forces.
3) These are soluble in non polar solvents.
4) They are less or moderately reactive because of bond making and bond breaking involved in chemical reactions.
8. Where do we use washing method in our daily life ? Give example. How do you correlate this example with enrichment of ore ?
A. 1) We use washing method whth water to separate dust from Rice, dal, vegetables, fruits etc.
2) Ore particles are crushed and kept on a slopy surface. They are washed with controlled flow of w ater less dense dust impurities are carried away by water flow leaving more dense ore particles behind.

15. Explain, why dogs pant during hot summer days using the concept of evaporation?
A. 1) Dogs pant during hot summer days and get their body cooled. This cooling effect is due to evaporation. Evaporation is a surface phenomenon.
2) Temperature of a system falls during evaporation. During summer the temperature in the human body increases the temperature of the skin becomes higher and the water in the sweat glands starts evaporating. Since evaporation is a cooling process human body cools.
3) Dogs don’t have sweat glands. Their body is covered with hair. They have sweat- glands only in their feet.
4) So by panting the water on the tongue evaporates resulting in the cooling of the dogs body.

Description :
1. Take a thermocole sheet and fix two thin wooden sticks of height 1 cm which have small slit at the top of their ends.
2) Arrange a copper wire ‘24 gauge’ so that it passes through these slits and make a circuit.
3) This circuit consists of a 3 volt battery, key, copper wire in series.
4) Keep a magnetic compass below the wire as shown in the figure.
Procedure :
5) Bring a bar magnet close to the compass. The needle in the compass gets deflected due to the magnetic field of the bar magnet.
6) Remove the magnet, take it away from the circuit. You will not observe any deflection in the needle.
7) Now switch on the circuit and you will observe deflection in the needle of the compass.
8) Now we come to know that this is due to the magnetic field produced by the current carrying wire.
17. Write about your favourite scientist / physicist. .
A. My Favourite Scientist is C.V. Raman.
1)Sir C.V. Raman is an Indian Physicist.

18.How can you verify that a current carrying wire produces a magnetic field with the help of an experiment ?
Ans.1.Take a thermocole sheet and fix two thin wooden sticks of height 1cm. Which have small slit at the top of their ends.
2.Arrange a copper wire ‘24 gauge’ so that it passes through these slits and make a circuit.
3.This circuit consists of a battery, key, copper wire in series.
4.Keep a magnetic compass below the wire as shown in the figure
AP SSC 10th class General Science Model paper 2015-16 English Medium Set 1-14
Procedure:
1.Bring a barmagnet close to the compass. The needle in the compass gets deflected due to the magnetic field of the bar magnet.
2.Remove the magnet, take it away from the circuit. You will not observe any deflection in the needle.
3.Now switch on the circuit and will observe deflection in the needle of the compass.
4.Now we come to know that this is due to the magnetic field produced by the current carrying wire.

20.Explain the significance of three quantum numbers in predicting the position of an electron in an orbit
Ans.1)Pridicting the position of electron in an orbit is described by a set of three quantum numbers.
(i)Principal Quantum number (n)
(ii)Angular momentum quantum number (l)
(iii)Magnetic quantum number (m)
2)Principal quantum number (n) tells about the size and energy of the main shell.
3)The Angular momentum quantum number (l) defines the shape of the orbital occupied by the electron.
4)The Magnetic quantum number describes the orientation of the orbitals.

21.Define hybridization. Explain the formation of BeCl2

Ans.Hybridisation : It is a phenomenon of inter mixing of atomic orbitals of almost equal energy which are present in the outer shells of the atom and their re-shuffling or redistribution into the same number of orbitals but with equal properties like energy and shape.

Formation of BeCQ:
(a)Be atom in its excited state allows its 2s orbital and 2px orbital which contain unpaired electrons to intermix and redistribute to two identical orbitals.
(b)As per Hund’s rule each orbital gets one electron.
(c)The new orbitals based on the types of orbitals that have undergone hybridisation are called sp orbitals.
(d)The two sp orbitals of Be get separated by 180°.
(e)Now each chlorine atom comes with its 3pz1 orbital and overlaps it the sp orbitals of Be forming two identical Be- Cl bonds (sigma sp-p bonds).ClBeC = 180°.

22.What is thermite process ? Mention its applications in daily life.
Ans.1) Thermite process involves the reaction of metal oxides with Aluminium.
2)When highly reactive metals such as sodium, calcium, aluminium, etc., are used as reducing agents, they displace metals of lower reactivity from the compound.
3)These displacement reactions are highly exothermic. The amount of heat evolved is so large that metals produced are in molten state.
Applications of thermite process :
1) The reaction of Iron oxide (Fe2O3) with aluminium is used to join railings of railway tracks or cracked machine parts.
2) Joining of cracked metal utensils in the house.

1. How can you say that India has stretched her wings into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal ?
A. India has two groups of Islands – Andaman and Nicobar Islands stretched in Bay of Bengal and Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian sea.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an elevated portion of submerged mountain parts running from Myanmar Mountain Arkan Yoma. In Andaman and Nicobar Islands,. Narkondam and Barren Islands are volcanic origin. The southernmost tip of India is found in Nicobar Island and called Indira point which was submerged during the 2004 Tsunami. Lakshadweep Islands are of coral origin. Its total geographic area is 32 sq.kms.This group of Islands is famous for great variety of flora and fauna.
So we can say that India has stretched her wings into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

2. Why does Datjeeling have pleasant weather as compared to Kolkata during summer season ?
A. 1) Kolkata is a place oh the sea coast and has lesser altitude.
2) Whereas Darjeeling is a place on great altitude.
3) As normal lapse rate suggests the temperatures in the places with greater altitudes are less compared to lower altitudes.
4) Thus in summer, Darjeeling will have a pleasant weather compared to Kolkata.

3.a) What is the graph about?
A. The graph is about sex ratio of Indian Population during 1951-2011.
b) The sex ratio is a cause of concern in India. Give reasons.

5. Give three examples where an average is used for comparing situations other than what is given in the chapter ‘Ideas of Development’.
A.1) The per capita income or the average income is used to compare economic development of countries.
2) We use averages to identify and analyse performance level in different areas.
3) We use averages to make calculations easier and averages reveal general performance level.

6. Is a similar pattern observed for Inda ?
A. Yes, there is a similar pattern observed for India also. Over the last 5 decades, the most production has increased in the tertiary sector. It replaced the primary sector. The basic services are also provided by the government and private sector. As the income levels of the people raised, people are able to enjoy many more services like shopping, tourism, etc.
Therefore it is disputable that the tertiary sector is playing a significant role in the development of Indian economy.

7. What are the reasons for multiple cropping in a rural area ?
A. The fact that multiple cropping is the way of life for the subsistence of farmer in the rural areas. Insurance against the vagaries of weather, diseases and pests is a major reason. By planting more than one crop in the same field, the farmer is also maximizing moisture, maintaining soil fertility and minimizing soil erosion, which are some of the serious drawbacks of mono-cultural farming.

8. What has to be done in order to increase the per hectare yield of a crop?
A. In order to increase the per hectare yield of a crop, necessary inputs have to be provided in a judicious manner.
One way is to expand irrigation but use water in a manner so that this vital resource is shared and made available to all.

SECTION – II

9. Give any one reason for farmers’ distress and even suicides.
A. The conservation of foodgrain fields into cash crops such as cotton in A.P. during the last two decades.

10. What is the main aim of production ?
A. The main aim of production is to produce goods and services required by the people.

11. Which leaves a deep impact on migrants ?
A. Exposure to different environment, stress associated with it, food available and social atmosphere leave a deep impact on migrants.

12. State the new strategies of NEP.
A. 1) Liberalisation 2) Privatization 3) Globalization

13. Write down some problems of urbanization.
A.1)  The growing urban population has to be housed.
2) It needs water supply, sewage and other waste disposal, transportation and many other things.
3) Vehicle use increases.

14. What are the reasons for female foetus infanticide ?
A. Due to the preference for male children parents may decide to abort female child before birth. Many adults consider female children as a burden.

SECTION – III

GROUP – A
15. How can you say that Himalayas are a boon to our country ?
A. 1) The formation of the Himalayas influences the climate in various ways.
5) These rivers bring a lot of silt, making these plains very fertile.
6) There are famous hill stations like Simla, Mussorie, Nainital, Raniket, etc. covered by evergreen forests.
7) The valleys are known for the cultivation of fruits.
8) There are passes in the Himalayas which act as great exchange of culture and commerce.

16. 1) What is missing ?
A. Though there has been an increase in urbanisation, the necessity of providing basic infrastructure that can support this growth is missing.
2) What do we require ?
A. We require roads, drainage, electricity, water and other public facilities.
3) What is government intervention making ?
A. Government intervention is making some headway in improving the urban infrastructure particularly those associated with road transport.
4) Which is not sufficient ?
A. The provision of electricity, water and health infrastructure is not sufficient.

17. 70% of our surface water resources are polluted. Why ?
A. Water bodies get contaminated due to discharge of pollutants in the water bodies without any treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution adversely affects not only aquatic plants and animals but it also affects human beings and ecosystems.
Causes of water pollution :
1) Sewage and waste water : Sewage, garbage and liquid waste of households, . agriculture lands and factories are discharged into lakes and rivers. These wastes contain harmful chemicals and toxins which make the water poisonous for aquatic animals and plants.
2) Dumping : Dumping of solid wastes and litters in water bodies causes huge problems. Different things take different times to degrade in water.
3) Industrial waste : Industrial waste is discharged into lakes and rivers by using fresh water making the water contaminated.
4) Oil pollution : Sea water gets polluted due to oil spilled from ships and tankers while travelling.
5) Acid rain : Acid rain is rain that contains large amounts of harmful chemicals from factory gases and that damages trees, crops and buildings.
6) Global warming : A gradual increase in world temperatures caused by polluting gases such as carbon dioxide which are collecting in the air around the earth that results in death of aquatic plants and animals.
7) Eutrophication : Eutrophication is an increased level of nutrients in water bodies. This results in bloom of algae in water and depletes the oxygen, in water, which negatively affects fish and other aquatic animal population.

18. “AGW is a controversial topic between the developed and developing nations – ” Support the statement.
A. There are disagreements between the ‘developed’ countries (mainly industrialized, economically more advanced countries of the West) and ‘developing’eountries (countries that are not as industrialised) about AGW (Anthropogenic Global Warming). Developed countries want developing countries to cut down on burning coal and other activities that add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Developing countries argue that developed countries developed precisely by burning fossil fuels in their development. Developing countries say that their economic development will be seriously damaged if they don’t burn fossil fuels (mainly coal), and that developed countries should do their fair share of work to help find alternatives that can help the developing countries to progress.

19. How is PDS related to food security of the people in the country?
A. 1) PDS has played a crucial role in reaching food to everyone both in the rural and urban areas. .
2) Around 1997, government decided that ration shops should cater mainly to the poor.
3) Governments buy foodgrains from farmers and supply these to the ration shops.
4) Ration shops keep stocks of foodgrains and these items are then sold to people.
5) Prices at the ration shops are meant to be lower than the prices in the market.
6) The government is trying to provide food to all.
7) The government stakes a lot of amount in purchasing food from farmers and wholesalers and selling them at subsidised prices.
8) Thus, PDS is thriving for food security of the people in the country.

20. Write your comments on organic farming.
A. Organic farmers forego the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Instead they rely mainly on natural techniques such as crop rotation, compost and biological pest control in farming. One of the main characteristics of organic agriculture is the use of local resources including on-farm biological processes such as availability of pest predators (birds, spiders, insects) or soil micro-organisms (Rhizobium and Azotobacter) which make nutrients more accessible to the plant. The use of synthetic chemical inputs is minimised and farms can be bio-diverse as they produce a number of crops rather than only one or two crops. Further more, production levels can be maintained similar to modern agricultural methods.

21.1) Who is building this project ?
A. The government of India is building this project.
2) What is the aim of this project ? .
A. The aim of this project is to generate nuclear power to meet the growing energy needs of the country.
3) In which district is the project coming up ?
A. The project is coming up in the district of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu.
4) How is the town of Tirunelveli ?
A. The town of Tirunelveli is quiet coastal town of fisher folks.

22. How can you say that GDP ignores some items ?
A. GDP records the market value of all final goods and services produced. But there are many items that are not sold/ purchased in the market. One important example is the work that is done at home like cooking, cleaning, organizing, bringing up children, tending to plants and cattle, etc. In most instances, these do not involve any monetary transaction and therefore remain outside the GDP measure, though they are extremely important for the economy. Also, the unpaid work is done mostly by women even today, in India and across the globe. So, these are not included in GDP.

In this world we can now begin a little to understand things, and a little to master them by help of science, which has forced its way step by step against religion, and against the opposition of all the old precepts. Science can help us to get over this craven fear in which mankind has lived for so many generations. Science can teach us, and I think our own heart can teach us, no longer to look around for imaginary supports, no longer to invent allies in the sky, but rather to look to our own efforts here below to make this world a fit place to live in instead of the sort of place that the churches in all these centuries have made it.
Religion is based, primarily and mainly, upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown, and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel to stand against all troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing-fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand-in-hand. It is because fear is at the basis of these two things.

Once he was to visit a place called Sevapuri near Varanasi and he travelled by train to reach the place. Sevapuri railway platform was not of adequate height. As the gap between the train compartment ramp and the platform was deep, it became very difficult for Lai Bahadur Shastri who was short in stature, to get down from the train. On seeing the plight of Lai Bahadhur Shastri, four lady passengers commented jokingly : “Now the Railway Minister can understand well the hardship caused to ladies due to inadequate height of the railwray platforms.” Lai Bahadur Shastri somehow got down the train and ordered the station master to get a crow-bar and spade. He started digging the mud and raising the platform height by filling it with mud. Inspired bv the examplary behaviour of Lai Bahadur Shastri, many passengers joined and within three hours, the platform height was increased.
Imagine you were a journalist and one among the passengers. Write a newspaper report on this incident.
Ans.                     CENTRAL RAILWAY MINISTER AT WORK
21st March 1947, Sevapuri, Varanasi : The Central Railway Minister, Sri Lai Bahadur Shastriji proved that ‘Execution is Important than Instruction’.
The platform of Sevapuri Railway Station was not high to set foot. It became difficult for our short man ‘Lai Bahadur Shastri’ due to the gap between the train compartment ramp and platform. Some women wished that Shastriji should understand the trouble of these steps to women.
Shastriji got down the train, ordered for a crow-bar and spade, started to elevate the height of platform. Some of the passengers shared the work and very soon the required work was done. The people on the platform hailed Shastriji for his humility. The women who made fun of him thanked him after their apologies.

Dear Sujith,
Hai ! It’s a pleasure to write to you and I could not stop myself after receiving your anxious letter ! Sujith, why are you so frustrated ? Why are you not confident of yourself ? As far as I know, you were active, diligent and positive.
Here is a piece of advice from my side. First of all organize your work, do it meticulously and aim at your target. Try to garner all the difficulties in your studies and sort them out in the order of difficulty. Work out on these aspects either with the help of your teachers or take special coaching for a few days. But remember, self-study is very important. Plan your work and work you plan. Test yourself from time to time and observe your progress.
One more thing I want to emphasize is your attention. Do not get distracted with any deviation. Remember your goal. Be social but avoid unnecessary abjections. Do not be allowed for false exultations. Keep up the fidelity in you for your academic goals.
O.K. ! I hope you must have been rejuvenated with this friend’s suggestions ! Write to me whenever you are in desperation. I’m ready with my boosting ! Be in touch.

Yours lovingly
Sreedhar

When the little white cat grew, she thought of her career. She wished to become a witch’s cat. So she went to her mum and said, “Goodbye, mum ! I’m going to be a witch’s cat !’
‘Oh, that’s nice !’’ said the little white cat’s mum. ‘Goodbye ! Come and see us soon’. The little white cat went in search of a witch. She found a witch and expressed her wish. But the witch said, “No you cannot be my cat. Because you’re white. Go away !’.
The little white cat searched and found another witch. She was lucky because she was in Scotland, and there are a lot of witches in Scotland. She found a witch and told her wish. The witch rejected with the same reason. The poor little cat had no job, no money or food. She was hungry and weak. She did not lose hope. She continued her search.
At last she came to a cottage. There was a chimney sweep sitting behind the cottage. He was eating his lunch : sandwitches and cake. He saw the little white cat and invited her to have a sandwich. The little cat thanked him. She saw some black soot and put her paw, then her leg and her whole body into it. She turned black. The chimney sweep said, “You’re black now. This is a witch’s cottage ! You can go and see her at the front door.”
The little white cat – now a little black cat walked to the front door. The witch was sitting in her rocking chair, eyes closed.
‘Hello ! Have you got a cat ?’
‘Hello ! No, I haven’t got a cat.’
‘Well, I’m your cat !’ said the little white cat. ‘Oh, that’s nice ! Jump on my knee. Oh, you are a nice little cat ! The witch stroked the little white cat, the little black cat. Then she said, ‘What a pity ! I can’t see you because I’m blind.’

16.Read the following passage.
Now answer the following questions.
A.Name any two fears mentioned in the passage.

2)___________________________________________________
Ans.(1) fear  of defeat    (2) fear of Death

(i)friends or companions __________________
(ii)rules to be followed____________________
(iii)arguments_______________
(iv)to desire________________
Ans.(i)allies   (ii)precepts   (iii)disputes   (iv)craven

C.Complete the following sentences using a word or a phrase each.
(i) Cruelty and religion have gone_______________
(ii) Our heart teaches us to look________________
Ans.(i)hand in hand  (ii)our own  efforts to make  this world  fit to  live

D.Mention the parents of fear.
(i)……………………………………………………………………………………….
(ii)……………………………………………………………………………………..
Ans. (i)Religion  (ii)Cruelty

E.Answer in a word or a phrase each.
(i)What are the possible reasons for troubles and disputes ?
(ii) How do you understand things and have control over them ?
Ans. (i)the terror of the unknown and wish to feel to stand against all troubles, (ii) being aware of science which is against all the old precepts.
