The governments of these countries acted on behalf of their capitalists to increase their areas of influence and reduce the area under their competitors. Rural-Urban Migration
People migrate from rural areas mainly due to insufficient employment opportunities inadequate income available in rural employment. People also migrate with the expectation of higher incomes and more opportunities for family members and may be better services. Ramaiah was able to find work in the organised sector. However, most urban migrants have to work as labourers and find employment in the unorganised sector. They could be working as hawkers, painters, repair persons, rickshaw pullers, construction labour, etc.
1) Why do people migrate from rural areas ?
2) Who was able to find work in the organised sector ?
3) Where do most urban migrants have to work ?

21. Do you think the classification of economic activities into primary, secondary and services sectors is useful? Explain how.
22. Read the paragraph given below and answer the questions that follow.
While service sector has grown, all service sector activities are not growing equally well. Service sector in India employs many different kinds of people. At one end there are a limited number of services that employ highly skilled and educated workers. At the other end, there are a very large number of workers engaged in services such as small shopkeepers, repair persons, transport persons, etc. These people barely manage to earn a living and yet they perform these services because no alternative opportunities for work are available to them. Hence, only a part of this sector is growing in importance.

1. Why do we often use the term “Indian peninsula” ?
A. Any country which is surrounded by sea on three sides and thefourth side is landlocked, is called peninsula.
India is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea as its three borders and the fourth side is landlocked with the Himalayan mountains. So we often use that term Indian peninsula.

2. Is it judicious way of using this water ?
A. No, the way is not judicious. The basic link between access to groundwater and land ownership on which these rules are based are flawed. Land owners should be restricted in the amount of water they can take out.

3. a) What is the third component of population change ?
A. The third component of population change is migration.
b) What is migration ?
A. Migration is the movement of people across regions and territories.
c) What are the kinds of migration ?
A. 1) Internal migration
2) International migration.
d) Which kind of migration does not change the size of the population ?
A. Internal migration does not change the size of the population.

4. How could the living conditions of migrant workers be improved?
A. 1) The working conditions of the workers should be revised.
2) Their children should be provided with education facilities.
3) Their families should be provided with health, sanitation facilities.
4) They should be provided with houses and better water supplies and\
5) A well defined policy, comprehensive approach, well co-ordinated actions and political will for social welfare will help to improve the plight of migratory sugarcane cutters.

Group -B
5. How is the service sector different from other sectors? Illustrate with few examples.
A. 1) The service sector is different from other two sectors.
2) The other two sectors produce goods. But the service sector does not produce goods by itself.
3) The activities under this sector help in the development of the primary and secondary sectors.
4) These activities are an aid or support for the production process.

6. Write your comments on multiple cropping; .
A. Multiple cropping helps the Indian agriculture in increasing its production. But usage of water, fertilizers increases and the fertility of land decreases.

7. “Organised sector is totally different from unorganised sector” – Support the statement.
ap-ssc-10th-class-social-studies-1-model-paper-2015-16-english-medium-set-5-7ans

8. Why should attention be given to increase the yield of jowar? Discuss.
A. After rice and wheat, jowar is a third important crop in terms of area and production. Paddy and Wheat together occupy 50% of the gross cropped area of the country. The remaining food crops including jowar also are having a very low yield level. Much attention has not been paid to increase their productivity. This explains the present shortage of pulses in the country. So attention should be given to increase the yield of jowar. ;

SECTION-II

9. Why does Daijeeling have pleasant weather as compared to Kolkata during summer season?
A. Darjeeling is at an elevation of 2,645 metres. Kolkata is at an elevation of 6 metres. Even though both are located in West Bengal, there is a difference in their elevations. So Darjeeling has pleasant weather when compared to Kolkata.

10. Why did the Tungabhadra basin lose its water storage capacity ?
A. With accumulation of silt due to mining, dust, soil erosion, debris the Tungabhadra Dam lost its water storage capacity.

11. Why is the number of seasonal migrants underestimated in India ?

In these two sectors the quantity of work depends on the physical strength of the labourer. Men are physically strong than women. So they are paid more wages.

14. What is meant by modernisation of the economy?
A. The NEP accords top priority to modern techniques and technologies. It also promotes computers and electronic industries. It has made the Indian industries dynamic.

SECTION – III

Group – A
15. What is the influence of the Himalayas on Indian agriculture?
A. Influence of the Himalayas on Indian Agriculture :
1) Fertile soil : The sediments carried by the Himalayan rivers are deposited in the northern plain in the form of fertile soil. It makes the plain one of the most fertile lands in the world, g.: Bhabar, Terai, Bhangar.
2) Source of rivers : The Himalayas act as a huge reservoir of water for the north Indian rivers. Abundant rainfall, vast snowfield and huge glaciers are the feeding grounds of the mighty rivers of India. All these are perennial rivers and lifeline of north India.
3) This region is suitable for construction of multipurpose projects which strengthens the Indian agriculture.
4) The Himalayan ranges keep the country warm by obstructing the northern winds. This helps Indian agriculture to cultivate many varieties of crops.

16. How are human activities contributing to global warming?
A. Human activities contribute to climate change by causing changes in Earth’s atmosphere in the amounts of green house gases, aerosols and cloudliness. The largest known contribution comes from the burning of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere.
Green house gases and aerosols affect climate by altering incoming solar radiation and outgoing infrared radiation that are part of Earth’s energy balance. Changing their atmospheric abundance or properties of these gases and particles can lead to a warming or cooling of the climate system.
Since the start of the industrial era (about 1750) the overall effect of human activities on climate has been a warming influence. The human impact on climate during this era greatly exceeds that due to known changes in natural processes such as solar changes and volcanic eruptions.

17. 1) Why do people migrate from rural areas ?
A. People migrate from rural areas mainly due to insufficient employment . opportunities inadequate income available in rural employment. People also migrate with the expectation of higher incomes and more opportunities for family members and may be better services.
2) Who was able to And work in the organised sector ?
A. Ramaiah was able to find work in the organised sector.
3) Where do most urban migrants have to work ?
A. Most urban migrants have to work as labourers and find employment in the unorganised sector.
4) How could they be working ?
A. They could be working as hawkers, painters, repair persons, rickshaw pullers, construction labour, etc.

18. Have you ever wondered how information about the people living in your locality or village, and the country as a whole is collected and recorded? Write your teachers’ experiences of collecting census data.
A. To collect census information, areas of the country are divided into enumeration districts. A census interviewer is assigned to each individual district. The interviewer is trained to fully understand each and every aspect of the census information needed. During the month before the census, the interviewer begins preliminary enumerations. The interviewer will visit each building in his or her assigned district and quickly and accurately complete the census questionnaires. Once the questionnaires have been completed, they are taken to a main census office to be checked and coded. The census information is then ready to be input into computers that can generate the required statistics.

Group -B
19. “Environment is crucially important for the lives and livelihoods of the local communities and the lifestyles of local communities are harmonious with the environment.” Explain.
A. 1) For most rural communities, the link between the environment and the lives of people is very strong.
2) Access to environment serves their needs like food, firewood, fodder, commercially valuable articles, etc.
3) They lose out all if they are displaced.
4) The environment is denuded of its rich biodiversity and rich traditional knowledge.
5) With it they can make good contributions to environment when it is endangered.
6) So, environment is crucially important for the lives and livelihoods of the local communities.
7) The lifestyle of local communities also should be in harmony with the environment.

20. Describe the relationship between increase in food production and food security.
A. Producing sufficient amount of foodgrains is an important requirement of food security. In order to increase the per hectare yield of a crop, necessary inputs haveto provided in a judicious manner. One way is to expand irrigation but use water in a manner so that this vital resource is shared and made available to all.
Planting drought resistant crops as per the local conditions, water harvesting and crop rotation are therefore used to raise production on a given piece of land. It is also important to ensure that soil and other natural resources are not damaged or depleted in the process.

21. Do you think the classification of economic activities into primary, secondary and services sectors is useful? Explain how.
A. To understand the behaviour of the different economic activities, and how they impact and in turn are impacted by the total economy, it is useful to qualify them in larger group of economic activities. One such a way of grouping economic activities is to classify them into primary, secondary and tertiary activities.
1) Primary economic activities include activities such as farming, forestry, fishing and mining. They also include the packaging and processing of the extracted materials.
2) Secondary economic activities include all industries manufacturing finished goods. This group consists of many broad industrial sectors such as automobile, chemicals, textiles, engineering equipment and construction.
3) Tertiary activities, also called service sector, provides services to the consumers as well as to other producers. This includes services such as distribution, retail, communication, transport, hotels and transport.
Division of all economic activities in these three groups enables us to study and understand many important characteristics of economic behaviour and to understand the nature and state of an economy.

22. 1) Write about the relation between service sector and its activities.
A. While service sector has grown, all service sector activities are not growing equally well.
2) Who are there at one end ?
 A. At one end there are a limited number of services that employ highly skilled and educated workers.
3) Who are there at the other end ?
A. At the other end, there are a very large number of workers engaged in services.
4) Why do they perform these services ?
A. They perform these Services because no alternative opportunities for work are available.

Their plan was to destroy forests and fields, so that it could be easier to kill, if there was no jungle cover for people to hide in. Dioxin, an element of Agent Orange, is known to cause cancer and brain damage in children and according to a study, is also the cause of the high incidence of deformities found in the sprayed areas.
