(i) Iron is rendered passive with fuming HNO3 because of formation of reddish brown layer of iron oxide which prevents its further reaction with the acid.

(ii) An aqueous solution of sodium chloride contains electricity because water is polar solvent and has high dielectric constant which leads to formation of sodium and chloride ions which conduct electricity.

(iii) Ionisation potential of an element is the amount of energy required to remove one or more electrons from the outermost shell of an isolated gaseous atom.
Across a period, the atomic radii decreases due to increase in nuclear charge due to addition of electrons which results in greater attraction of valence shell electrons. Hence, I.P. increases.

(iv) Alkali metals are good reducing agents because alkali metals have one valence electron which they lose to attain stability. Hence, they themselves undergo oxidation causing reduction of others and are good reducing agents.

(v) Hydrogen chloride gas cannot be dried over quicklime because quicklime reacts with it as per the following reaction :
CaO + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O
