Introduction
Velu was an eleven year old boy. He had run away from home. He got into a railway train without a ticket. He had to do so because he had no money. He escaped the ticketcollector’s notice because he did not come to that unreserved compartment.

Velu on the Platform
He got off the train at Chennai Central. His legs were unsteady as if he was still standing in a moving train. It was because of tiredness, weakness and fear. The crowds and the way the people looked upon him, made him miserable. He sat on a bench on the platform with his small bundle beside him. He was very hungry. For two days, he had eaten nothing but some peanuts and a piece of jaggery.

Velu Meets Jaya
Suddenly he heard a rough voice calling him. He saw a girl around his age. She was wearing a very long banian. Velu stared at her vacantly. Then she asked his name. She guessed rightly that Velu had run away from home. She told him that he won’t get food sitting there.

The girl was a ragpicker. She picked her sack and moved away. Velu thought she was his only hope. So he followed her.

Velu Had No English
Velu caught up with the girl. The two came on the road. The girl helped him cross the road with her. They walked along the side of the road. There were huge signboards above them. The writing was all in English. Velu understood nothing. This showed that he did not know English.

After about an hour’s walk, they stopped in front of a big building. The sign on the building read : “Sri Rajrajeshwari Prasanna Kalyana Mandapam”. Velu read it as it was in Tamil like the sign on the Central Jail. Velu looked at the huge hall and the crowds of people inside. He asked the girl if they (Velu and the girl) were going to eat there. The girl ridiculed him. Then she led him to a garbage bin behind the hall.

They walked on for half an hour. They came to a bridge across a dirty trickle of water. Jaya called it Buckingham canal. Near some puddles of water, there was a row of huts. These were the strangest huts Velu had ever seen. They were made of all sorts of thingsmetal sheets, tyres, bricks, wood and plastic. They stood crookedly and looked as if they would fall at any moment. To Velu these huts looked strange because in his village the houses were made of mud and palm leaves.

वह गाड़ी से चेन्नई सैटूल पर उतरा। उसकी टांगें ऐसे कांप रही थीं जैसे अभी भी वह चलती गाड़ी में खड़ा हो। ऐसा थकान, कमजोरी और डर के कारण था। भीड़ और लोगों की उसके ऊपर पड़ती नजरों ने उसे पेरशान कर दिया था। अपने छोटे से बंडल को बगल में रखकर वह प्लेटफार्म पर पड़े एक बैंच पर बैठ गया। वह बड़ा भूखा था। दो दिनों से उसने सिवाय, मूंगफली और गुड़ के एक टुकड़े के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं खाया था।

अचानक उसने एक भद्दी आवाज सुनी जो उसे बुला रही थी। उसने एक लड़की देखी जो लगभग उसकी समवयस्क थी। वह बड़ी लंबी बनियान पहने थी। वेलू ने खाली नज़रों से उसकी ओर ताका। फिर उस (लड़की) ने उसका नाम पूछा। उसने सही अंदाजा लगाया कि वेलू अपने घर से भागकर आया था। उसने उससे कहीं कि वहाँ बैठे-बैठे उसे भोजन नहीं मिलना था।

वेलू का अंग्रेजी न जानना
वेलू लड़की के साथ आ गया। दोनों सड़क पर आए। लड़की ने अपने साथ सड़क पार करने में उसकी मदद की। वे सड़क के किनारे-किनारे चलते गए। उनके ऊपर बड़े-बड़े साइन-बोर्ड थे। सब कुछ अंग्रेजी में लिखा था। वेलू कुछ नहीं समझा। इससे पता लगा कि उसे अंग्रेजी नहीं आती थी।

सैंट्रल जेल
वे बड़ी देर तक चलते रहे। लड़की ने एक भवन की ओर इशारा किया जिसके चारों ओर दीवार थी। वेलू ने इसके ऊपर | लिखे तमिल शब्दों को पढ़ा। यह सैंट्रल जेल थी। लड़की हँसी। उसने उससे कहा कि अगर वह उस जेल के अंदर जाना न चाहे तो सावधान रहे। वेलू ने कहा कि उसने कोई अपराध नहीं किया है। लड़की ने कहा कि इससे कोई अंतर नहीं पड़ता था। महत्त्वपूर्ण बात यह थी कि वह पकड़ा न जाए।

लड़की ने एक दबा हुआ केला उठाया और उसे वेलू को खाने को दिया। वेलू को धक्का लगा। उसने पूछा कि क्या वे जूठन | खायेंगे। लड़की असहमत थी। उसने कहा कि वह केवल अनछुआ भोजन ही करती है। उसने उसकी ओर एक बडा (एक दक्षिण भारतीय भोजन) फेंका। वेलू ने उसकी ओर अरुचि से देखा। पर वह इतना भूखा था कि किसी भोजन से इनकार न कर सकता था। अतः उसने केला और बड़ा भी खा लिया। लड़की को केवल एक केला और मिला जिसे उसने खुद खा लिया।

आधा घंटे तक वे लोग पैदल चलते रहे। वे गंदे नाले के ऊपर | बने एक पुल पर आए। जया ने इसे बकिंघम झील बताया। कीचड़ | भरे पानी के पास झोंपड़ियों की एक कतार थी। ये ऐसी विचित्र झोंपड़ियाँ थीं जैसी वेलू ने पहले कभी नहीं देखी थीं। वे सभी प्रकार की वस्तुओं से बनी थीं-धातु की परतें, टायर, ईंटें, लकड़ी और प्लास्टिक। वे टेढ़ी खड़ी थीं और लगता था कि किसी भी समय गिर सकती थीं। वेलू को ये झोंपड़ियाँ विचित्र लग रही थीं क्योंकि उसके गाँव में घर मिट्टी और ताड़ के पत्तों से बनाए जाते थे।

Introduction
Thomas Hardy once visited a Parish to supervise the restoration of a church. On his return people noticed two things about him. There was a new glow in his eyes. There was also a piece of paper peeping out of his coat pocket. This paper had the draft of the present poem.

The poet says that he had gone for the res-toration of a church. When he started he hardly knew that the visit would be so invigorating. It proved to be like visiting Lyonnesse. Earlier England was important to the author only because there was Cambridge. Now it had a greater appeal for him. He had met Stephen Hawking there during a walking tour. Stephen Hawking is a disabled person. He is the successor of Issac Newton and has his Chair at the university. He is a brilliant astrophysicist. He is also the author of‘A Brief History of Time’. It is the biggest, best-seller of his times.

Meeting Hawking
The tour was over. The writer phoned Stephen Hawking’s house. Hawking’s assistant attended the telephone call. He told the assistant that he had come from India. He added that he was on a wheel chair. He mentioned that he wanted to write a book about his travels in Britain. Then he expressed his desire to see Stephen Hawking. The time for his meeting the Professor was fixed. It was from three-thirty to four. The interview began on time. The writer felt that the disabled got fed up with people asking them to be brave. They got stronger on seeing somebody like them, achieving something huge.

The computer voice replied that Professor Stephen Hawking hadn’t ever been brave. He had no choice in it.

Others’ admiration of Hawking’s living could not console him. Then the writer asked him about his advice to the disabled people.

The Advice
The voice advised the disabled to concentrate on what they are good. They should try nothing beyond it. They must not be over-enthusiastic. Then the writer saw Hawking’s big garden. At last he wheeled out. The writer found his journey successful and inspiring.

June 24
It is the first day of monsoon mist. The mist has concealed the hills. It has also silenced the birds. The author hears Bijju calling to his sister. He can feel that Bijju is running. However the mist doesn’t let him see Bijju. The mist appears to change the hills in two ways. It conceals the hills from view. It also makes them silent. It is so because the birds fall silent in the mist.

वर्षा गर्म और उमस भरी है। अत: यह उतनी असुविधादायक नहीं जितनी कि सर्दियों की वर्षा। फूल दिखने लगे हैं। लेखक पर्वत-स्थल और घाटी को एक ही वाक्य में वर्णित करता है। वह स्थान : “जो शायद कभी स्वर्ग रहा हो।”

27 जून
मानसून के साथ जोंक आ गयी हैं। एक तेंदुआ भी देखा गया है। यह कुत्तों और अन्य पशुओं को चुराता रहा है। कुछ मौसमी पुष्प भी आ गए हैं। अधिक महत्त्व की बात यह है कि नए पक्षी आ गए हैं। इन्हीं में मिनीवेट (सहेली) हैं। ये चमकदार रंग के | (पक्षी) हैं। वे पत्तियों के बीच ये शांत बैठे रहते हैं।

2 अगस्त
सारी रात वर्षा होती रही है। टिन की छत पर गिरती वर्षा की आवाज लेखक को प्रसन्न करती है। लगता है जैसे कोई वर्षा से अछूता है फिर भी वर्षा के साथ है।

31 अगस्त
मानसून की पैदावार हर जगह दिखाई दे रही है। कोबरा लिली के बीज लाल होने लगे हैं। यह इस बात का चिह्न है कि वर्षा अब समाप्त होने वाली है। सारे गड्ढों में वर्षा का पानी भर गया है। अत: सांपों और चूहों ने छतों, टांडों और गोदामों में शरण ले ली है।

About the Poet
Gieve Patel is a famous Indian poet and playwright. Patel is also a practicing doctor. He was bom in Mumbai in 1940. He completed all his education from Mumbai. His first collection of poetry was entitled poems and was launched by Nisim Ezekiel in 1966. How Do You Withstand, Body and Mirrored Mirroring are some of his famous collections. He also wrote famous plays like—Princes, Savaska and Mr. Behram. He conducted a poetry workshop in Rishi Valley school for more than a decade. He also edited a collection of poetry which was published in 2006.

Central Idea of the Poem
In this poem, there is a beautiful ironic statement written by the poet about ‘Killing’ a tree. Actually, he means its opposite. He taunts how trees are to be ‘killed’ but they mustn’t. He further says that a tree is hard to kill with the knife. The tree takes years to grow from the earth. He says that to ‘kill’ a tree, its roots must be pulled out entirely from the soil. This poem also conveys a message that the trees are our lifeline. So they must not be killed. He instructs how a tree is ‘killed’. He gives out the message that trees are something pious and like human beings. He conveys that the tree is very deep rooted and cannot be wiped out easily. He indicates and compares it with the evil which also deep rooted in the surroundings and cannot be uprooted so easily without changing the environment.

The poet considers the tree as a living organism. According to poet, it has the right to live like any other creatures. But the man is killing it with utmost cruelty and callousness. It implies that a person shall be a murderer if he ‘kills’ it this way. He says that a knife will not do harm to a tree. कवि वृक्ष को एक जीवित जींव के रुप में समझता हैं। कवि के अनुसार इसे भी अन्य प्राणियों की तरह जीने का अधिकार हैं। लेकिन आदमी इसे मार रहा है। यह अत्यंत क्रूरता और लापरवाही का उदाहरण है। यह कविता परोध प से यह संदेश देती है कि पेड़ हमारी जीवन रेखा हैं। इनकी हत्या नहीं। की जानी चाहिए। लेकिन वास्तव में वह इसका विपरीत अर्थ हैं। यह अर्थ है कि एक व्यक्ति किसी का कातिल हो सकता हैं। अगर वह पेड़ को इस तरह से मारता है। वह कहता हैं कि चाकू से पेड़ का कोई नुकसान नहीं हो। अंत में, कवि जानकारी देता है कि अगर पेड़ की हत्या करनी है तो उसे पूरी तरह से उखाड़ा जाना चाहिए। अंत में कवि का संदेश है कि पेड़ कीमती है। इसकी हत्या नहीं की जानी चाहिए। वि का यह भी कहना है कि पेड़ों को जड़ें बहुत ही गहरी होती हैं तथा इन्हें आसानी से उखाड़ा नहीं जा सकता। वह इसकी तुलना गुराई से करता है, जिसकी अरे भी बहुत ही गहरी होती हैं तथा इन्हें आसानी से खत्म नहीं किया जा सकता।

The narrator decides to pack
Jerome, the narrator, felt pride on his packing. Three friends decided to go on a holiday. He offered to do packing. George and Harris, his friends, were impressed by that. They relaxed by lighting a cigar and pipe respectively that the narrator would do the packing.

The narrator had intended it otherwise
But the narrator had intended that George and Harris would pack. And he would boss over them. When they relaxed, he was irritated. People’s not doing anything greatly irritated him. He couldn’t sit still and see others working. He would enjoy getting up and overseeing others working. He hated seeing people doing nothing when he was working.

Packing done but many things forgotten
The narrator started the packing. He had finished packing in a short time. Harris told him that he had forgotten to put the boots in. He opened the bag and packed the boots in. He was going to close it. Just then he had an idea had he packed his tooth-brush ? He had some wild memories with his tooth-brush.

Packing searched for tooth-brush
He turned everything out. But he could not find the tooth-brush. He found brushes of George and Harris more than eighteen times over. But he couldn’t find his own. So he put the things back one by one. Then he found the tooth-brush inside a boot. He repacked the things once more.

The narrator finished packing the bag. Soon George asked if the soap was in. But the narrator was in anger. He won’t open the bag again. However, he found that he had packed his tobacco-pouch in it. So he had to re-open the bag. Then George and Harris undertook to do the rest of the packing.

Things become exciting
Harris and George were not good packers. The narrator could see piles of plates, cups, kettles, cakes, tomatoes, etc. Soon the packing became exciting. Cups were broken. Harris packed the strawberry jam on top of a tomato and squashed it. George walked over the butter. The narrator sat and saw them packing.

This irritated George and Harris. They stepped on things. Then they didn’t find what they wanted to find. They packed the pies at the bottom of the bag. They squashed them after putting heavy things on them.

Excitement over packing continues
George and Harris upset everything. George trod on the butter, while packing. George got the butter off his slipper. Then they tried to put it in the kettle. It won’t go and what was in wouldn’t come out. They at last got it. They put it down on a chair. Harris sat on it. It stuck to him. Then they went looking for it over the room.

वर्णनकर्ता ने पैकिंग शुरू कर दी। उसने थोड़े से समय में पैकिंग समाप्त कर ली। हैरिस ने उसे बताया कि वह जूतों को पैक करना भूल गया था। उसने थैला खोला और जूतों को अन्दर पैक कर दिया। वह इसे बन्द करने जा रहा था। तभी उसे एक विचार आया । क्या उसने अपना टूथब्रश पैक कर लिया था ? उसकी अपनी टूथब्रश के साथ कुछ असभ्य (बेकार) यादें थीं।

टूथब्रश के लिए पैकिंग खोजी गई
उसने सब चीजें बाहर निकाल दीं। परन्तु वह टूथब्रश नहीं ढूंढ़ सका। उसे जॉर्ज और हैरिस की टूथब्रश अठारह बार से अधिक मिली। परन्तु वह अपनी नहीं हूँढ सका। इसलिए उसने एक-एक करके चीजें वापस रख दीं। तब उसने टूथब्रश को एक जूते के अन्दर पाया। उसने एक बार और चीजों की पैकिंग की।

पैकिंग की गई और खोली गई
वर्णनकर्ता ने बैग की पैकिंग समाप्त कर ली। शीघ्र ही जॉर्ज ने पूछा क्या साबुन अन्दर है। परन्तु वर्णनकर्ता गुस्से में था। वह दोबारा बैग नहीं खोलेगा। फिर भी उसने पाया कि उसने अपनी तम्बाकू की थैली उसमें पैक कर दी थी। इसलिए उसको दोबारा बैग खोलना पड़ा। तब जॉर्ज और हैरिस ने बाकी की पैकिंग करने की जिम्मेवारी ले ली।

इससे जॉर्ज और हैरिस उत्तेजित हो गये। उन्होंने चीजों के ऊपर पैर रख दिये। तब वे उन चीजों को नहीं ढूंढ सके जो वे हूँढना चाहते थे। उन्होंने कचौड़ियों को बैग की तली में पैक कर दिया। उन्होंने उनके ऊपर भारी चीजें रखने के बाद उनको कुचल दिया।

जॉर्ज और हैरिस ने सभी चीजों को अस्त-व्यस्त कर दिया। पैकिंग करते समय जॉर्ज का पैर मक्खन के ऊपर पड़ा। जॉर्ज ने अपने स्लीपर पर से मक्खन उतारा। फिर उन्होंने उसे केतली में डालने का प्रयत्न किया। यह अन्दर नहीं गया और जो अन्दर था। वह बाहर नहीं आया। आखिर में उन्होंने इसे पा लिया। उन्होंने इसे एक कुर्सी के ऊपर रख दिया। हैरिस इसके ऊपर बैठ गया। वह इससे चिपक गयी। तब वे इसे ढूंढने के लिए कमरे में गये।

पैकिंग हो गई। हैरिस ने कहा कि उसे आशा है कि कोई भी वस्तु टूटी नहीं मिलेगी। फिर उन्होंने सोने का निर्णय लिया। हैरिस ने वर्णनकर्ता से पूछा कि क्या वह बिस्तर के अन्दर या बाहर सोना पसन्द करेगा। जॉर्ज ने पूछा कि वह उन्हें कब जगाये। उन्होंने समय के ऊपर बहस करना आरम्भ कर दिया। अन्त में उन्होंने 6.30 बजे जागने का निर्णय लिया।

About the story
This is the story of an Intruder. He entered the house of a playwright, Gerrard. He, however, did not know that the owner of the cottage was a playwright. He only knew him as Gerrard. He had heard about him a few things. He knew that Gerrard was something of a mystery man. He lived in the wilds of Essex. Gerrard gave his orders on phone and never met the tradesmen.

The Intruder enters Gerrard’s house
The Intruder was a criminal. He had also killed a policeman. He was, now, being chased by police. He thought that he resembled Gerrard in body. He decided to kill Gerrard and then live himself as Gerrard. So, he broke into the cottage of Gerrard one day.

Gerrard ready to go out
Gerrard was then preparing to leave his house. He was going to attend a rehearsal of his drama. He had prepared his bag in which there were props for the rehearsal.

The Intruder threatened Gerrard with his revolver. He asked him to answer his questions. Then, he told him that he intended to kill him and then live in his house as Gerrard. Gerrard cautions the Intruder

Just then, Gerrard gave him a push. The revolver fell as the Intruder stepped into the cupboard. Gerrard shut the door in a moment and picked up the revolver. Then he telephoned to call in the police to arrest the Intruder.

घुसपैठिये ने बन्दूक दिखाकर जिरॉड को धमकाया। उसने उससे अपने प्रश्नों का उत्तर देने को कहा। फिर उसने उसे बताया कि उसका इरादा उसे मारकर उसके मकान में जिरॉड के रूप में रहने का था। वह शरीर की रचना में जिरॉड से मिलता-जुलता था। उससे मिलने वाले लोगों की संख्या अधिक नहीं थी। घुसपैठिया को लगा कि शेष जीवन वह जिरॉड बन कर आसानी से रह सकता था। उसने जिरॉड की आवाज़ की नकल करना सीख लिया।
