The Bicycle Ride
One of the friend of the author suggested that the two should go for a bicycle ride the next day. The author reached the place half an hour before his friend and was waiting for him in the garden. The author’s friend enquired about his bicycle and then gave it a shake holding its front wheel and the fork. After a while the man took out the front wheel of the cycle while the author was away for a while looking for a hammer.

The author insisted on putting on the various parts of cycle in place, but his friend wanted to check the front wheel. He unscrewed something and from somewhere around a dozen of ball bearings came out. His friend insisted that the author must collect all of them else the bicycle might not be resorted to its old condition. The author collected around 16 of them and kept them in his hat. The author’s friend now started taking off the gear-case. The author warned him not to mess up with the gear-case, but his friend said that nothing is as easier as taking off the gear-case. He took it off easily, but had a nightmare while fixing it back to its place.

His bicycle which was until now in good condition was now lying scattered divided in many parts. Author wanted to stop his friend from causing further troubles, but he admits that he is weak at hurting others. Then it was the time for the chain which he tightened to an extent that it stopped moving. He then loosened it until it became twice as loose as it was before.

After applying his tricks on the cycle, author’s friend seemed to be contended and now wanted to put all the pieces back into their place. It took a lot of time and a great effort. The process revealed that his friend was inexperienced and knew nothing about repairing a bicycle. After struggling for many hours his friend was able to somehow fix the different parts of the bicycle. The author took him to his back kitchen where his friend cleaned himself and then the author sent him back to his home.

लेखक की जो साइकिल थोड़ी देर पहले तक अच्छी हालत में थी, अब वह कई भागों में बिखरी पड़ी थी। लेखक ने उसे रोकना चाहा पर उनके मित्र ने कहा कि वह किसी को यूं घायल नहीं देख सकते? इसके बाद मित्र ने साइकिल की चेन को इतना ज्यादा कस दिया था कि अब वह आगे घूम ही नहीं रही थी। इसके बाद मित्र ने चेन को इतना ढीला कर दिया कि वह पहले से दोगुना ज्यादा ढीली हो गई थी।

Inside the chocolate factory Mr Wonka is searching for a new recipe which will make people older. He asked Charlie about the oldest thing in the world Charlie’s reply was a tree. Mr Wonka added that it is the Bristlecone pine trees growing in the slopes of Wheeler Peak in Nevada, USA is the tree that lives longer than anything else. Mr Wonka then went into the Great Glass Elevator to travel across the world to collect items from some of the oldest living things.

When oxygen present in air combines with carbon and hydrogen present in a fuel, energy is released in form of heat and light and this is what fire is. To make fire fuel, heat and oxygen is needed. Wood, coal, gas are fuel, oxygen is available in air. But to cause fire heat is essential. A piece of paper doesn’t catch fire until that is supplied to it. Every fuel burns at a particular temperature which is also called ‘flash point or kindling temperature.

Fire : A Friend and a Dangerous Enemy
Fire is a boon if it is kept under control but can be dangerous if it goes out of it. It is used in our house daily for cooking food, burning candles and so on, but if it goes out of control it can cause damage to life, houses and even forests. Fire can be controlled by taking away any three of the things required for burning it. It can be stopped immediately by taking away the fuel.

Mysterious Mr Nath
Nishad and his 10 year old sister Maya has always been inquisitive about their neighbour Mr Nath. One day their marbles went inside his house and Nishad got a chance to catch a glimpse of Mr Nath. To Nishad he appeared to be a crook running away from the cops. He had a bad scar on his face and didn’t have any friends. But Mr Nath is a patient to their mother who is a doctor by profession. Their mother has told them that he is a polite man. Nishad is also called Seven because his name meant the seventh note on the musical scale.

Soft Hearted Nishad
The two children were busy discussing their mysterious neighbour. They argued about his financial wealth, how he manages his food and so on. Nishad thinks that he is poor and doesn’t have much money while Maya believes that he has got a lot of it and has kept it hidden somewhere in his room. Then, it was Mr Nath’s scar that bothered the children. They thought that he might have got during a shoot-out with the police. On their mother’s birthday, Nishad went along her to the clinic. He happened to see Mr Nath there.

The author had known the shoemaker for many years because he used to make boots for his father. Mr Gessler was the shoemaker who lived with his elder brother in their shop in London. The shop didn’t have any signs apart from the name of the Gessler Brothers. He used to make boots only on orders. Once the author questioned Mr Gessler if it wasn’t awful to make those shoes perfectly fitting into the feet they were meant for. The man answered with a heavy German accent that it is an art.

Mr Gessler will be engrossed in his boot making art most of the time and won’t talk much with his customers. He strongly admired every piece of materials he used to work with. The boots made by Gessler brothers were of supreme quality and lasted very long. But in once occasion the author had a different experience. He complained about it to Mr Gessler. To this the old man promised that he will repair the shoe and if couldn’t he will return the money to the author.

On one occasion while placing an order for a shoe, the author was a bit absent-minded. He was wearing a pair of boots bought in an emergency from a large shop. With a sad face he commented that it hurts the customers but still the big firms don’t have any self-respect. They lure customers with their advertisements and not with their works. This made the king lose his temper. He believed that no one could stop the people from talking about Hilsa fish not even Gopal who was the wisest man in his court. The king challenged Gopal to buy a huge Hilsa fish and bring it to the palace without anyone asking him about it. Gopal accepted the challenge.

Handing for the Challenge
After a few days, Gopal shaved beard from half of his face and smeared ash on himself. He wore rags and looked disgraceful. Temptation for Jalebis
Munna was a student of fifth class at the Government School, Kambelpur. He was going to school with four rupees in his pocket to pay his fees. But his teacher, Master Ghulam Mohammed, was on leave. So the fees could not be paid that day. On his way back, the sight of Jalebis tempted him. The coins in his pocket began to jingle.

Coins Spoke
Coins do not talk. But that day they actually spoke. One rupiya said, “What are you thinking about ?” It drew his attention to the fresh, hot jalebis. It told Munna that they were meant to be eaten. Only those with money in their pocket can eat them. And money is meant to be spent.

Summary Of Jalebis
Reasons for not following Advice
He didn’t follow the coin’s advice. It was the money for the fees. How could he spend it on jalebis ? He won’t show his face to his teacher and God. Besides this, he was a good boy. He got so much to eat at home. So he considered even looking at something in the bazaar a sin. If Master Ghulam Mohammed got angry, he would keep him standing on the bench. Moreover, he belonged to a well-to-do family. So he enjoyed great prestige. Therefore, it was not proper for him to eat jalebis standing in the bazaar.

The rupiyas did not like what Munna had said. They began to speak at the same time. They made such a loud noise that the passers by stared at him with surprise. So he held them tight in his fist. They were now silent. The oldest rupiya told him they were trying to tell him something for his own good. He asked Munna if he didn’t like eating those jalebies. If he spent the money that day, he would get the scholarship the next day. Then he can pay his fees.

Munna returned home. Digesting the jalebis was now a problem for him. A burp came with every breath. There was the danger of every burp bringing out a jalebi or two. He had to take his dinner also. Otherwise he would have been asked why he did not want any food. If he had pretended illness, a doctor would have been called. The result was that he lay coiled up like a jalebi during the night. But he was able to digest the jalebis.

Another Problem
Munna faced another problem. He went to school the next day. He found out that he won’t get his scholarship that day. It would be paid next month. Master Ghulam Mohammed had announced that he would take the fees during the recess. But when the recess bell rang, Munna left the school. On the way, he prayed to God to arrange four rupees for him. He reached the Kambelpur Railway Station. The elders had given him two warnings. First, he should not cross railway tracks. Second, he must never eat sweets with his fees money.

Munna’s Absence from School
Munna sat under a tree near the railway tracks. He started thinking about his miserable condition. The matter had looked simple and straightforward. This was because he could pay the fees with the scholarship money. If he had known that he would get the scholarship next month, he would not have bought jalebis. Now he was absent from school for the first time because of the jalebis. He felt like crying. He started thinking about his fees and his teacher’s cane. He closed his eyes and began to pray.

Munna prayed to God to help him. He said that he was a very good boy. He has memorized the entire namaaz. He even knows the last ten surats of the Quran by heart. मुन्ना अपने लालच पर काबू नहीं पा सका। रुपये उसे जलेबी खाने के लिए मनाते रहे। इसलिए वह जलेबी खाने के लिए घर से बाहर नंगे पैर निकल पड़ा। वह बाजार की तरफ दौड़ा। उसने हलवाई को एक रुपये की जलेबी देने को कहा। वे कोई महंगे दिन नहीं थे। एक रुपये में आजकल के 20 रुपये जितनी खरीद हो सकती थी। हलवाई ने एक अखबार पर जलेबियों का ढेर लगा दिया। उसने जलेबियाँ ली और एक गली में भाग गया। उसने ढेरों जलेबियाँ खायीं।

पड़ोसी बच्चे
पड़ोस के बच्चे गली में इकट्ठे हो गए। मुन्ना ने अपने आस-पास के बच्चों को जलेबियाँ देनी शुरू कर दीं। जब अन्य बच्चों ने उसके बारे में सुना तो वे भी वहाँ आ गए। मुन्ना दौड़ता हुआ हलवाई के पास गया। उसने एक रुपये की जलेबियाँ और खरीद लीं। उसने इन जलेबियों को बच्चों में बाँट दिया। बच्चों की भारी भीड़ उसके चारों तरफ इकट्ठी हो गई। भिखारी भी वहाँ आ पहुँचे। बच्चे इतने खुश थे कि वे उसके लिए कुछ भी कर सकते थे। मुन्ना ने बचे हुए दो रुपयों से जलेबियाँ खरीद लीं। उसने उन्हें भी बाँट दिया।

मुन्ना घर वापस आ गया। जलेबियों को पचाना अब उसके लिए एक समस्या थी। हर साँस के साथ उसको डकार आने लगी। उसको इस बात का खतरा था कि हर डकार के साथ एक दो जलेबी बाहर आ जाएगी। उसको अपना शाम को खाना भी खाना था। वरना उससे पूछा जाता कि उसको खाना क्यों नहीं चाहिए। अगर वह बीमारी का बहाना करता तो डाक्टर को बुला लिया जाता। परिणाम यह हुआ कि वह रात में जलेबी की तरह कुंडली बनाए लेटा रहा। परन्तु वह जलेबियाँ पचाने में सफल हो गया।

दूसरी समस्या
मुन्ना के सामने एक और समस्या थी। वह अगले रोज स्कूल गया। उसे पता लगा कि उसको उस दिन वजीफा नहीं मिलेगा। यह अगले महीने दिया जाएगा। Master Ghulam Mohammed ने घोषणा कर दी थी कि वह मध्यावकाश के दौरान फीस लेगा। लेकिन जब मध्यावकाश की घण्टी बजी, मुन्नी स्कूल से चल पड़ा। रास्ते में उसने भगवान से उसके लिए चार रुपये का इन्तजाम करने की प्रार्थना की। वह कम्बलपुर रेलवे स्टेशन पहुँचा। बुजुर्गों ने उसको दो चेतावनियाँ दी थीं। पहले तो यह कि उसको रेल की पटरियाँ पार नहीं करनी चाहिएँ। दूसरे, उसको फीस के पैसे से मिठाइयाँ नहीं खरीदनी चाहिएँ।

मुन्ना की स्कूल से अनुपस्थिति
मुन्ना रेल की पटरियों के पास एक पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गया। वह अपनी दु:खी हालत पर सोचने लगा। मामला बिलकुल आसान और सीधा लगता था। वह इसलिए कि वह अपने वजीफे के पैसे से फीस दे सकता था। अगर उसे यह पता होता कि वजीफा उसको अगले महीने मिलेगा तो वह जलेबी नहीं खरीदता। अब वह जलेबियों के कारण स्कूल से पहली बार अनुपस्थित था। उसे ऐसा लगा जैसे कि वह चिल्लाना चाहता हो। वह अपनी फीस और अध्यापक के बेंत के बारे में सोचने लगा। उसने अपनी आँखें बन्द कर लीं और प्रार्थना करने लगा।

Ranji had come to Rajpur only recently. He had not yet made any friends there. There were hills and forests on all sides of Rajpur. He roamed in these places alone. It was very hot. One day he discovered a pool in the forest.

The Pool
The water in the pool was clear. It came there from a cluster of rocks. In the monsoon the water came in large quantities. During the summer the flow was weak. Yet it never dried up like the pools of Rajputana deserts.

Ranji into the Pool
Ranji got into the water. He knew swimming. He had so far known only the muddy pools of Rajputana deserts. This pool was much better. His body was free of fat. It shone in the sunlit water.

The next day Ranji came again. He enjoyed a lot in the coolness of the water. After an hour, he lay to relax on the smooth rocks. It was then that he noticed a boy staring at him in a hostile manner. At home, Ranji could not hide his injuries. His mother insisted on his staying at home for the rest of the day. In the evening, he was able to slip out to the bazar. There he took some lemonade and jalebis. When he had finished it, he saw the Punjabi boy coming down the road. Both of them scowled at each other.

Ranji reached the pool unwillingly next day. He was feeling weak and knew he would be beaten in another fight. Yet, how could he refuse the challenge ? Then Ranji executed another fine dive to teach him. It went on for sometime. Then the Punjabi boy said that Ranji must teach him everyday. Ranji agreed.

तब वे एक-दूसरे की गर्दन पर थे। लड़ते-लड़ते वे ताल के उथले पानी में आ गए। पानी में भी वे लड़ते रहे। फिर भी पाँच मिनट बाद वे दोनों थके हुए खड़े थे। एक-दूसरे से थोड़ी दूरी पर खड़े होकर दोनों ने गर्व से अपने राज्यों का नाम दोहराया। तभी पंजाबी लड़के के मन में एक प्रेरणा जागी। उसने प्रस्ताव किया कि यह लड़ाई अगले दिन चलती रहे। रणजी मान गया। तब वे अलग-अलग रास्तों से जंगल से चले गए।

घर आकर रणजी अपनी चोटों को छिपा नहीं सका। दिन के शेष भाग में उसकी माँ ने उसके घर पर रुकने की जिद की। शाम को वह चुपचाप घर से निकल कर बाजार चला गया। वहाँ उसने कुछ लैमन और जलेबी ली। जब वह इसे ले चुका तो उसने पंजाबी लड़के को सड़क पर उस तरफ आते देखा। दोनों ने एक-दूसरे को देखकर मुँह बनाया।

दोनों ने एक-दूसरे को अपने नाम बताए। फिर पंजाबी लड़के ने रणजी से पूछा कि क्या वह शक्तिशाली नहीं था। रणजी सहमत हो गया और बोला कि वह (सूरज) असली पहलवान है। पंजाबी लड़का सूरज बोला कि वह संसार का सर्वश्रेष्ठ पहलवान बनेगा। फिर रणजी की ओर समीक्षात्मक दृष्टि से देखता हुआ वह बोला कि रणजी भी शक्तिशाली है। पर उसने कहा कि वह दुबला है। उसने उसे अपने साथ भोजन करने की दावत दी। सूरज ने एक सौदे का प्रस्ताव रखा अगर वह उसे गोता लगाना (डुबकी) सिखाएगा तो वह रणजी को पहलवान भी बना देगा। एक बार फिर रणजी मान गया।

“यह हमारा ताल है”, सूरज बोला। ”हमारी आज्ञा के बिना कोई दूसरा यहाँ नहीं आ सकता है।” रणजी ने कहा कि अब वहाँ आने की हिम्मत कोई नहीं करेगा क्योंकि अब वे मित्र हो गए थे।

Hafeez Contractor was a very unhappy school boy. In the first and second year he was a good student. From the third standard onwards, he seemed to have lost all interest in studies. He was particularly afraid of Mathematics. He had nightmares about a maths examination. He dreamt of appearing in the examination not knowing anything at all about the subject.

Contractor Loved Action not Theories
As a student Contractor was interested in games and playing jokes on others. He was a very good sportsman. He was the senior champion for many years. He was also the captain of his school cricket team.

Contractor passed his examinations only by copying. However when he approached his 11th class, the Principal called him and said, “Look here, Son, I have been seeing you since day one. He exhorted Contractor to rise to the occasion and study.

So he started going to an architect’s office to learn French.

अचानक एक वास्तुकार से मुलाकात
स्कूली शिक्षा के बाद कांट्रेक्टर सेना में जाना चाहता था। उसकी चाची इसकी इजाजत नहीं देती थी। उसकी माँ उसे पुलिस सेवा में भर्ती होने की इजाजत भी नहीं देती थी। उसने उससे कहा कि वह स्नातक की पढ़ाई करे। एक सिफारिश के बल पर उसे जयहिंद कॉलेज में प्रवेश मिल गया। वहाँ उसे फ्रैंच पढ़नी पड़ी। फ्रैंच में कमजोर होने के कारण उसे अपनी एक विवाहित चचेरी बहन की सहायता लेनी पड़ी। उस (चचेरी बहन) का पति एक वास्तुकार था। अत: फ्रैंच पढ़ने के लिए वह एक वास्तुकार के ऑफिस में जाने लगा।

वह वास्तुकार उसे कॉलेज के प्रिंसीपल के पास ले गया। वास्तुकला के कॉलेज में 80-90 प्रतिशत से कम पाने वाले किसी विद्यार्थी को प्रवेश की इजाजत न थी। कांट्रेक्टर के अंक केवल 50% थे। अत: प्रिंसीपल ने उसे सावधान किया, ‘मैं तुम्हें प्रवेश परीक्षा में बैठने की अनुमति देंगा, लेकिन अगर तुम उसमें अच्छा न कर सके तो मैं तुम्हें (कॉलेज में) प्रवेश नहीं दूंगा।”

उस प्रवेश परीक्षा में कांट्रेक्टर को A⁺ मिला। उसके बाद तो जिंदगी बड़ी आसान थी। इसके बाद वह सदा प्रथम श्रेणी और प्रथम स्थान प्राप्त करता रहा।

प्रतिभा का स्रोत
कांट्रेक्टर ने कभी कोई योजना नहीं बनाई थी। उसकी एक शिक्षिका श्रीमती गुप्ता ने उससे कहा था, “तुम हर चीज़ में बेकार हो पर तुम्हारे रेखाचित्र अच्छे हैं।” उसने उसे सलाह दी थी कि तुम बड़े होकर एक वास्तुकार बनना। जब वह वैसा बन गया वह वापस जाकर उनसे मिली और यह बात बतायी।

कांट्रेक्टर को अध्ययन पसंद नहीं था
कांट्रेक्टर भाषाओं में अच्छा न था। उसका गणित भी बहुत बुरा था। वास्तव में इन विषयों पर उसने कभी ध्यान ही नहीं दिया। वह बोर्डिंग स्कूल में था जहाँ उसके लिए हर दिन एक नया दिन होता था। जब परीक्षा होती थी, वह बस नकल कर लेता था।

प्रतिभा और पढ़ाई
उसके स्कूल में जो प्रथम और द्वितीय स्थान पर रहते थे, वे साधारण काम कर रहे हैं। जहाँ तक उसका प्रश्न था, स्कूल जीवन ने उसे स्वतंत्र रूप से कार्य करने के योग्य बनाया। किताबों से जो उसने सीखा, उससे कहीं अधिक अपने द्वारा किए गए कामों से सीखा।।

विशेष रुचियाँ
स्कूल में कांट्रेक्टर की रुचि पुस्तकों में न होकर अन्य बातों में थी। कक्षा के बाहर अगर वर्षा हो रही हो तो वह बहते हुए पानी | के बारे में सोचता। वह लेक्चर को भूल जाता और डैम के अंदर बहने वाले पानी के प्रवाह के बारे में सोचता। वह सोचता कि पता | नहीं बाँध के अंदर कितना पानी समायेगा।

मित्रों की सहायता
उसके स्कूल में अनुशासन का विशेष महत्त्व था। कभी-कभी । झगड़े में किसी विद्यार्थी का बटन टूट जाता था। ऐसी स्थिति में वह कांट्रेक्टर के पास दौड़ता। कांट्रेक्टर एक ब्लेड से चाक को काटकर बटन बना देता था। फिर किसी को पता न चलता कि उसका असली बटन गायब है। पूरी साफ सुथरी यूनीफार्म के साथ वह डिनर लेकर चला जाता था।

उसकी संरचना
आज जब कांट्रेक्टर के पास कोई क्लाइंट (ग्राहक) आता है। तब वह उसकी ओर ध्यान से देखता है। वह उसके चेहरे, कपड़े और तौर-तरीकों पर ध्यान देता है। इससे उसे उसकी रुचि का पता लग जाता है। वह लोगों को अच्छी तरह से तादात्म्य स्थापित करने | में सफल होता है। फिर वह स्वतः ही खाका तैयार कर लेता है। इसे वह अपने ऑफिस में काम करने वाले लोगों को दे देता है।
